Being more evil inclined (I cant help it in my games) I blow it up.
The reward is a nice hotel room you can upgrade and stuff at Tenpenny tower, and access to an armory where you can restock on ammo (anyone else constantly running out of ammo?)
I did 2 play throughs.
1- blew it up and got a nice room and a quest with some amo.
2-Didn't blow it up and got the sherif killed and had some quests in town.
its up to you.

And if you disarm the bomb you get a house in Megaton, where you can upgrade stuff and access to an armory, blah, blah, blah.
Same reward either way.

is there any way to not blow up megaton and still get negative karma? I plan on starting the game over again.

LOL. You really want that negative karma, eh? I understand. I'm the same way. In life, I try not to piss people off, but in games, I want to be what I can't be in real life without consequences - evil! EEEVIIIIIIILLLLLLL~!!!!!!

Walk in town and open fire!!!!! Then the whole town is yours!!!! Muahahahahahaha!!!!
That's a huge moral choice to make! I'd like to blow it, but being in my 1st playthrough, i feel like this town could be useful later...i'm playing it nice this time around (not blowing megaton, not killing innocent people cause i don't want everyone to be after me) but i already scheduled a 2nd All Evil playtrough.
Oh man...THAT'S a video game. I love it.

The town is full of jerks, especially the bartender who jacks up the price for what's essentially useless information anyway if you ask him a second time where your father is without completing his little errand boy task. I think that was the point where I decided to murder everyone in the town, loot their stuff, and then nuke it. Make sure you use a melee weapon when you genocide the town though. You don't want to waste any ammo. Also make sure to raid the town armory, and kill that mercenary guy (i think his name was Jericho) as that gives you some really nice weapons and armor early in the game.
I killed the sheriff early on, so I had fun walking around the town in the sheriff's outfit, clubbing people to death with a lead pipe and saying "I'm the new sheriff of this town!"
I also made sure to kill Tenpenny and Burke point blank with a shotgun to thank them for my new apartment. I spared most of the people in tenpenny tower though. I needed the shops there for trading.
But eh, whatever. Most of the NPCs are either unlikeable or behave like robots, just like in Oblivion, so I had no qualms about doing this kind of stuff. At least the game lets you be evil.
If you play a evil charter kill every one besides Burke then blow Megaton upÂ
If your good its probably not the best idea. My main charter is evil so I did blow up Megaton, and I do like Tenpenny tower more than Megaton
I say BLOW IT UP !
my cousin has beat the game when not blowing up Megaton, and is now playing it again , this time nuked Megaton, and he is having much more fun with the game with negative karma. The slavers camp like him, they give him stuff all the time. I blew up Megaton after playing many quests, and now got ammo sources all over, so I would not miss the Megaton. IT was a cool city, but I didnt need it anymore, so i racked up explosive skill to 40 and was able to rig the bomb to blow. The view from Ten penny tower is awesome ! If you have a sub, it rumbles the floor. I would have preferred to done some mayhem in Megaton before I blew it up. Once I shot someone, the whole city came after me and I could not even make it out of there alive. But it could be fun to shoot some people in the bar and have a shoot out with the sheriff before you blow it up. If anything, save a version of the game right before you blow it up, in case you regret it, you can go back to it.
If you think that decision is a tough moral decision, wait til you get to the quest "Tranquility Lane" and you have to do al these things for Betty in order to get out again. You have to put on a clown outfit and slash everyone in the town in their house, ir order to get to the next stage.
Unless you can figure out if there is an alternate action...
