LOVE this game , much better than CoH IMO. CoH, getting tired of the same engine, same "build base, swarm enemy" tactics.
Some amazing moments, this game is more like a ballet of death, and destruction. Watching tanks plow thru buildings, and bodies flying thru the air in slo-mo never gets tiresome. It is best played at slow speeds, where you can think, where the heroics of a single unit that may or may not be directly controlled by you will win the tide of battle. For best results, direct control will do it almost every time.
Managing inventory is not as big of a pain as it sounds, but you do indeed need to scrounge for ammo and other items after extended firefights for certain maps or campaigns.
Damage modeling is amazing, I took out one particularly nasty AT position that had me bottled up at a chokepoint by either ricocheting a shell, or by debris flaking off of a building I was shelling. TRULY awesome.
I will never tire of this game.
NOW some of the bad........
The voice acting is truly horrendous....... if bad voice acting can make you miss out on this gem of a game though..... your loss.
The AI does cheat a bit, it is hyper aware of AT personnel, and other high threat units, and in one particular case it had a range halfway across the map, whereas my 88's could only shoot a few hundred yards...... HUH? but I have also seen where some AI units were looking for my guys and I was able to surprise attack them, very cool.
The tutorial is umm, lacking.
It is not very intuitive at times, there is one map/mission where I have seen alot of people stuck, and posting for help on the forums, including myself. The welder and the transformers both are "unlocked" so to speak. You need to keep trying til you get a "padlock" icon on the transformers. I can't tell you HOW many shells I poured into those sumbiches waitng for them to explode, and AFTER you DISMOUNT the welder after hauling it to the sub. Then use your character to "unlock" the hatch with the welder.
The textures aren't very pretty when zoomed all the way in, but still looks amazing from a zoomed out view.
SAVE often, and in DIFFERENT save slots. You never know when you may have reached a point of no return in units, or in my case, a glitch where it told me I needed to accomplish repelling a counter attack, but I had eliminated EVERY enemy from the map, it just kept sending barges full of troops to be shot up by my Panzers.
Not sure how accurate the some of the vehicle damage modeling is. I'm not sure about anyone else noticing this, but a single British Valentine III tank is virtually unstoppable by a pack of German Pzk IV Gs. If they had known how undestructible this little bugger was, they woulda made a million of them and won the war easily.
It is difficult at times, and you will feel overwhelmed. But when that one AT gun you've been personally manning has destroyed a dozen Crusader tanks, and won the day, you will truly feel accomplishment.
Buy this game if you can understand the "ballet of death".
Don't buy it if your style is more of "a hurry up build stuff and swarm the enemy".
I'm not all the way thru it yet, but I can't stop playing it, and I fully expect it to be in my top 5 of all time.
