First there just areas that cause massive slow down....the first time you exit the Metro in the Prelude and when you exit with Bourbon....after you leave these first 2 areas ( rooms) the FPS goes back up...if I go back into the room after you Bourbon split up it again plummets ( into the teens)...but as soon as I go outside into the wasteland of Moscow it's back into the 50s....

Other then that the FPS are acceptable...( 40s to 70ish...way higher underground)...using FRAPS

However I did have to turn Advance FOD off...and 4MSAA. ( These cut my FPS in half)

My settings...

19x12

DX 11

Very High

AAA

16 AF

FPS mid 40s to 70....( DX 10 mode...double all those numbers...except I still get the slow downs in those few areas )

My Card settings are all maxed ( AA 16 , AF 16, Mipmap etc are all maxed with triple buffering on ) All are forced on...don't know if makes any difference or not in this game...being forced on.?

Rig i7 920 @3.2

6 gig ddr 3

5970....

Crysis and other games run beautifully......

Am I just expecting too much from my rig or is it Metro 2033 ?

Should I just shut up and enjoy ?

It runs terribly for how it looks. 3 year old graphics with next year hardware requirements = coding issue.

The FPS dead spots are pretty bad too. There are a few places where you can just look at a wall randomly and go into the single digits, look away with a ton more on screen and it'll go over 100.

Your rig is pretty cool man, trust me it's the game Metro that's screwing your PC, same thing like Stalker Clear Sky. Too bad games like this gives frustration to players, especially when you learn to like the game but doesn't perform well. Aaarrrggghhhhh

I didn't experience the specific problems you're referring to, but I wasn't running the game on those settings. It's possible a patch will solve some of these issues down the road. Personally, considering the level of detail you're running, I'd just accept it.

You can't max it on the 5970. It uses heavy tessellation, it's tailored for the 480 nvidia cards.

First of all, turn off all PhysX. With an ATi card, turning any PhysX(whether advanced or not) will move all the workload onto your CPU. If your CPU can't keep up(and usually even an i7 can have trouble compared to an independent 8800GT PhysX card), your game lags.

Also turn off your AA in your card settings, especially if it's Edge Detection AA. The AAA provided by the game itself actually looks surprisingly well with nearly no performance loss and no texture detail loss(unlike MSAAx4). By the way, in-game MSAAx4 and Edge Detection AA x24 can stack in some games.

If your performance still does not improve, turn off V-sync and you should experience some performance gain. If you can drop down to 40 fps, V-sync is unnecessary and may cause some slowdowns.

If your performance still doesn't improve after all these, you can consider turning off Tessellation, which causes characters and objects to look... well, less rounded. It'd really bug me if you have to end up doing that though, since I could keep the Tessellation on and game at 1680x1050 maxed perfectly with only a 5870.

You are wrong. 480 only has tesellation advantage when it's CUDA tessellation and not DX11 tessellation. That is why 480 manages to beat 5970 in heavy tessellation tests in Unigine 2.0 only.

Admittedly, Metro 2033 is not very well optimized, but saying that it's tailored towards 480 cards is just plainly wrong. At 1080p there is a difference of 10fps between 5970 and GTX 480.

I am not sure what you are getting at with this statement. Yes it has optimization issues. Though I average around 50 FPS which is 100% playable. The game is quite stunning .

i run on 1600 X 900 with my 5870 perfectly with no slowdowns and averaging around 50 + fps.

(1) i use DX 10

(2) i turned off adv PhysX

(3) AAA

My CPu is only 2.83 ghz (Q505), 4gb ram .

Your 5970 should kick Metro 2033 in the arse... just dont go MSAA X 4 and you will be fine .

Just thought I might throw this in to the mix... If you really want to get a better experience you can add a nvidia card for physx. Works wonders with metro 2033. before it would dip down to the low teens on heavy volumetric fog, smoke, and physx scenes; now it doesnt go below 34 looking directly at the green pools with heavy mist, avg. about 80 now, and will max around 182 during gameplay. Settings: very high, dx10+, CPU and GPU physx on, AAA, AF4X, 1280x1024

let me put this way,an old 9800GT could easily run this game flawlessly at high setting @ 1080P. I understand you might under the impression that why a 3x times more powerful card can't handle a 2 steps up "very high" setting, so simply put, the only answer to your question is, at very high setting+2 dx11 features+advanced phyics(oddly you find it in game option instead of graphic option) metro2033 is simply the most demanding(and the prettiest) PC game has yet released on PC

but you should know that 5970 is currently the most powerful single card in the world, though it's just not good enough to "totally max out" Metro2033. even with the latest ATI driver, 4xMSAA + advanced physics still kicks fps down below 30 on any ATI cards(one of my rig using 5870crossfire which is 20-30% faster than 5970) nor can 480GTXSLI manager to hold up all these settings in a playable frame rate(though better than ATI cards)
