Windows 7 (formerly known as Blackcomb and Vienna) is the working name for the next major version of Microsoft Windows as the successor of Windows Vista. Microsoft has announced that it is "scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year timeframe", and that "the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar." Windows 7 is expected to be released sometime in 2010. The client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. A server variant, codenamed Windows Server 7, is also under development.

They shouldn't release a 32-bit anymore. Just make 64-bit standard. It'll be better for everyone (especially us gamers) in the long run.

yeah i heard about this

but still... WOW!!??!!.. it's strange they'd do that and rather frustrating that they'd rather spend recources in dev'ing a new operating system than optimizing the current gen( and it seems like vista has still alot of room to grow ), M$ perfecting the art of money grab?

but then again 2010 is 2 years away, 2 year is an a long time

there will be a whole new crazy gen of videocards and cpus, so i dunno, even though i use it, vista has always seemed a bit like a lame duck to me

By the way , all the screenshots that

the original poster posted are

fake, modded with windows

blinds, and other GUI mods.

Windows 7 is actually an ongoing buid that CLOSELY resembles vista. I reccoment all of you to do some research if you are even interesed.

To the OP : you are a BSer.

While I like the general look (if legit), doesn't it strike anyone else as odd that the theme doesn't stay consistent through all those photos? It's not like Windows has ever been of bastion of customizability.

of course those pics won't be the final version. Inconsistancy is common in preview builds or builds that are constanly updated

dunno if they are bullshots

what i do know is that m$ is banking on (always has ) OeM sales and i know by round about 2010 i'll be getting a new rig with latest gear so i'll be happy to slap new vwesion of win dows on it

I'll be using Ubuntu (or another Linux distro) as my main OS on a new rig by then, and keep WinXP on this rig for some of my games. Open Source is my friend.

What the **** **** [Censor Bypass Removed]?

Wasnt Vista released in 2007??? Theyre releasing a new OS THREE years later?!

Vista isn't even doing that well due to performance issues, theyre going to release an even more system-intensive OS?

Erm, I think I'll **** stick with Vista, thank you. And you can bring out your god damn Direct X 13, as athene would say, " I don't gief a [Censor Bypass Removed]"

windows 95 and windows 98 = 3 years seperation

Moving to PC Hardware.

And traditionally Windows has been released on roughly a 2 - 3 year timeline (except for Windows 2000 to XP, which was around a year); XP - Vista has been the exception rather then the rule.

you don't think M$ would make the same mistake do you with making another.. vista. I believe that vista was only a TEST os to see what would happen if a new os didn't support anything except stuff for the future. With that being said I actually do think that this windows 7 will be a hit and probably will have everything vista is missing hopefully for not only for our loyalty to M$ but for the sales of the os in general. If ubuntu was able to play these games without some performance hitting application then ubuntu would be my primary OS.

It looks alot like Vista. But i will be using some distrobution of linux by then, i am now (Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy heron). I run Wine to keep my ability to play windows games. There is no real point in running a security black hole (windows) on your computer when you can run linux and not have to worry about viruses and spyware, while still maintaining your ability to use windows programs. And, if you want, you can make Linux look like Windows. And there are special effects for the desktop enviroment called Compiz-Fusion. You get 3D desktops, Rain, Snow, Wobbly windows, and much more! Heh, you can tell i am a Linux fan!

Not buying it. I don't give a crap. Microsoft has lost there freaking mind. Vista came out 2007, and they want to release this 3 years later? So they basicly want to dump vista. You could not get vista right, why the heck would I buy this? Well I'm sticking with it, the onlt new system that will go on my computer for a wile is xp, not windows 7.4seal
Vienna will be an upgraded and hopefully perfected Vista. It's just like the switch from Windows 2000 to XP. Thankfully though, they don't seem to be rushing it, like they did with XP.

Except this IS microsoft we're talking about. 90% market share of personal computers, and a good slice of the commercial and server markets (despite all the security/exploit problems) because it gives IT people job security. Microsoft already hit strike one with me when Vista64 refused to install with 4GB of RAM installed. I don't care of the fact that it worked fine after I took one of the sticks out... it's the principle of the thing. You go to a 64-bit OS to be able to use a large amount of RAM. They should have expected and tested before releasing it to make sure that it could install with greater-than 4GB of RAM installed in the system on more than just intel chipsets. Secondly, is the fact that even after one full year since release, and at least one service pack already, Vista refuses to let me use my monitor on DVI. Oh, I'd have no problem if I could use VGA, but doing so means I lose PiP functionality with my consoles. I can't even BOOT with DVI enabled because the thing refuses to give me a video signal until I unplug and replug in the monitor. And even then, it refuses to let me anywhere near my native resolution. This is also a much bigger problem because while I can watch HD-DVD movies (with my 360 drive) no problem in XP 32-bit or 64-bit, I then wouldn't be able to on Vista if I have to use VGA only. And this monitor is DVI with HDCP, mind you. It shouldn't be having any problem in Vista, yet it is. :| Third, and final, strike out for Vista was the fact that even with 4GB of RAM installed, Vista64 performed about the level of XP 32-bit now (with it only reporting 2.75GB of the 4GB that I can use). A 64-bit OS means that you are supposed to literally double the available registers that your modern 64-bit x86 processors are supposed to have at their disposal. It's supposed to perform a lot better CPU-wise on that front alone. XP x64 on the same exact machine and with a slower hard drive was like the Flash compared to Vista64's drunken Hulk.
