I have always liked computer games and currently have a modest system for playing them (Athlon 64 3000+, 1 GB RAM, Radeon x700 Pro 256 MB, stuff like that).  I never really thought about upgrading my monitor because I had a 17" CRT and thought LCDs were overpriced.  Today, however, I found a 19" widescreen Samsung Syncmaster 940BW LCD at a CompUSA for $185+ tax, so I decided to get it to save space.

WOW!!!  With the DVI cable and the new monitor, I see some of what I've been missing in PC gaming the past few years.  Everything is smoother, cleaner, more vibrant, and just plain better!  I can't believe the difference!  Plus, my games actually run faster at 1440x900 than they did at 1024x768 before.  Dark Messiah is like butter now, and even older games like Painkiller run faster and with a lot more detail.  I have instantly regained my faith in PC gaming!

Has anyone else recently crossed over from the dark ages of CRT monitors?  If not, you need to.  Now!

Not, CRT dipslays, but I crossed over to Widescreens in December, and after playing Civ 4 and SupCom in widescreen, I am amazed :).

Been wanting to go wide for a while now, but since many games don't support it yet, I'm hesitant to make the switch.

personally i've found that all the games i've purchased recently (except for BF2142) have widescreen support. this website has a solution for widescreen in pretty much every game you can imagine (2142 included, and im happy to say that widescreen in it looks great). just an fyi.

I have a Samsung 906BW
It's 19 inches, widescreen 1440 x 900 resolution, 2 MILLISEC REFRESH, 2000:1 contrast, etc, etc.

And it was only $239.99 at Circuit City of all places.

I am using a Samsung 32" Widescreen LCD HDTV as a computer monitor and I would never go back to a 17" monitor.

A hearty thank you sir. I guess the problem isn't as big as I thought. Widescreen, here I come!

I took the leap myself about 4 months ago. First game I loaded up was Oblivion. My first comment was "all the wasted time playing this game without widescreen". It's simply amazing how much better games are. I tell ya I could never go back to a 4:3 screen now. In certain games it's almost an unfair advantage you have over other players because of how much more of the play field you can see.

I upgraded my crt 19'' to a lcd widescreen 22'' the difference is massive. The backlighting is sooo nice and playing on consoles is even better, quite a wise decision.

Good move. I have a 24inch myself and I am loving it. I am also loving C&C3 at 1920x1200 MAX AA/AF, MAX settings.

I got a widescreen LCD for xmas and the first game i loaded up was serious sam 2, and i was in shock at how awesome it was. Widescreen games at 1440x900 or greater is so great.

I've got the same moniter as the TC, and I finally found something that'll give my 8800 justice for all it's power. Oblivion at 1440x900, everything maxed, AAx8, HDR as well just makes the world... so alive, considering it still runs at a rate of (assuming here, as I've never had a slowdown, or choppyness while fighting 3 skeletons, 2 goblins and a wolf, with a guard helping) 20fps outdoors.

Last year I went from a 17" 1280x1024 CRT to a 20.1" 1680x1050 LCD. I'm never going back to 4:3.
