Although the gameplay looks potentially simple I'm still looking foward to this game. Anyone have any guesses about the kind of specs Mirrors Edge will need?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Yeah, the game looks spectacular. My biggest concern is that the environments will be overly linear, and because of runner vision or whatever it's called pointing you exactly where to go, the game may end up being overly trivial. Still, I have faith in DICE.
On the specs, it's UE3 - so something similar to BioShock, Gears of War and UT3 et al. Probably a little higher due to the larger environments.
im quite sure runner vision can be turned offKh1ndjal
That's good to hear, but that just raises further issues. Given that the game is all about speed and momentum, being able to maintain that speed without runner vision may be particularly difficult and not having runner vision may skew the entire pacing of the game.
See, as I see it (of course I haven't played it yet), either they baby the player or they screw with the pacing. That's what happens when you have absolute linearity. So my hope is that there will be multiple routes through each map, and multiple ways of tackling most jumps and that runner vision just shows you the 'best' way, and you're free to explore other means of progression but you always have the runner vision to fall back on.
My biggest concern is that the environments will be overly linear.

Yeah, that's my biggest concern too. That, and the length of the game.

I guess you already got your answer, but yes, runner vision is optional.
I just hope I don't get motion sickness while playing it.

The devs did research on motion sickness and found that adding a focal point for players to focus on greatly helps. So they added a dot in the middle of the screen (which, again, can be turned off).

They also removed the camera moving with Faith's running (liek, her head bobbing sort of thing =]) which I hope can optionally be turned on, since I actually really liked that xD

Haha yeah I seriously doubt that I'll get motion sick, so I say bring it on! :D

ya ive been stoked about this for a long time. I think Portal sort of opened the eyes of developers that just because a game is first-person, it does not have to be a 100% shooter.
As for gameplay, as long as it is not too linear I will be happy methinx. If they give you the path options in enough variety (like Crysis does) it will be awesome, but I wont buy a game where each time you run the exact same path.
Also, Shodan, I could have sworn it used the Source engine but I might be wrong.
And does anyone else think the heroine looks like a badass Bjork? I'd love to see her parkour around rooftops with that goose outfit on...

oh well, so long as the gameplay rocks!

I can see why you would be mistaken, it does look VERY source-ish
Portal is a fantastic game, yes. But you can rest assured that this game has been in development longer than when Portal was first announced.ya ive been stoked about this for a long time. You have evidence of this of course?
I'm just afraid the parkour elements will end up being like a gimmick. The thing about games that rely on gimmicky mechanics like this is that the level design has to be absolutely stellar for the game not to feel repetitive and new game mechanics have to be gradually introduced over time. That's what made Portal and Braid such fun games.
I'm not to concerned about the motion sickness. Even though in real life I'm extremely sensitive to movement, in video games I've never felt even remotely motion sick. As long as the field-of-view is 90 degrees, things should be okay. I personally actually like the head bobbing, it makes the game feel a lot more kinetic.

Portal was revealed mid-late 2006 and Mirror's Edge was announced a year later and first shown early in 2008. That means that if the developers dropped everything and started Mirror's Edge after seeing Portal, the game will have had a total of 2.5 years in development at its release later on this year.
A game like Mirror's Edge, right from preproduction planning to gold in two and a half years seems really pushing it to me. They would have needed perfect timing on their development cycles to have the people free to rush into this new project just after first seeing Portal. Developers can easily spend half a year (or more) just on planning, so I don't believe they would have seen Portal and just immediately known the direction to go with their game.
Even with DICE's large employee pool and EA's slaver whips cracking, I don't see a game like ME being going from the drawing board to retail in two and a half years.
It is possible, I suppose - especially as they wouldn't have a ton of engine building to do, but it seems very highly improbable. Portal may have been an influence, but I find it hard to believe that DICE didn't already have a pretty good idea of the direction they were taking ME before Portal was revealed.[QUOTE="JP_Russell"][QUOTE="Forerunner-117"][QUOTE="kieranb2000"]They also removed the camera moving with Faith's running (liek, her head bobbing sort of thing =]) which I hope can optionally be turned on, since I actually really liked that xD
