World of Warcraft is currently the most popular, but it has a monthly fee of 15 bucks. Guildwars is the alternative, it has no monthly fee, and it rather popular. Both are great games, but if you're serious at all about MMOs a monthly fee is gonna be the norm. Grab a copy of World of Warcraft, free 30 day trial, and see if you like it. If you don't like using a credit card, most game stores sell time cards for WoW.

Ya, I can't really call Guild Wars an MMO really, but WoW is the best out there right now, and really a pan handling hobo can get 15 dollars a month, because it's worth it it really really is, and like the above poster said, you can buy game cards for most major MMO's at stores if your problem is getting that credit card.

Lord of the Rings Online seems like a good choice. Or EverQuest II.

World of Warcraft is currently the most popular MMO. I don't know of any MMO set in the 1950's or anything. Final Fantasy XI, City of Heros, City of Villans, Ragnarok Online, Decide, Everquest 2, Lord of the Rings, are all good too. As a whole all MMO's are the same really. It just depends what you want to grind, for how long do you want to grind it, in what context do you want to grind it, and how good do you want the graphics to be while you are grinding.

check out www.mmorpg.com or www.mmosite.com for complete lists of past present and future mmo's.

You won't find ANY good MMORPG for free. Any. If you're so desperate for something free, play a real-time strategy or first person shooter title. They're free, and possibly better.

Time to start playing real MMOs. Stop with F2P bs and pick up a P2P. Even worst P2Ps are better than best F2Ps.
