I want to get into modding games, and was thinking of starting with FEAR but am not sure where or how I can mod it.

Or does anyone suggest any game thats a nice way to begin modding, and could you please list the software. I am new at this so please excuse my ignorance at what can be modded or not thanks.

Well. It depends what you want to do and what plans you have.

Do you have skills as a programmer, sound creator, level designer, game designer, texture artist, concept artist, 3D artist, story writer, etc.? Were you planning to start your own small mod? Were you planning to start a huge project that might need multiple people? Or did you have intentions to join a group thats already working on a mod and want to offer one or more of the skills i listed?

If you wanted to start fairly small and basic, try modding for Oblivion/Morrowind. You dont have as much flexibility as other games, but you dont have to deal with a huge amount of complexity like Unreal's editor.

If you wanted to join a project already under way, you can check a listing of hosted mods that are looking for someone.

If you were planning to start your own large project, thats not a question someone would typically ask as you may be a bit too inexperienced to get something large going. But if you wanted to, HL2 is a good engine and theres plenty of information out there for it.

yea moding takes a lot of time, experience, and skill.

unless you're just wanting to creat your own amature maps, skins, models, or whatever, You'll need a team to make a full blown mod.

Well....is that what you ultimately want to do? Be a level designer? Or did you have aspirations to be something else but want to start with making maps/level?

In any case, if you say you zero skill/experience, the best and easiest map editors to start with are the Starcraft and Warcraft 3 map editors. Pick one and make maps with them that you find are fun and balanced. Once you get used to its basic features experiment and useits trigger/layering system to create really crazy maps. You can go online and play a few custom games to see what some people have done with using just the map editor.

After that, try Oblivion/Morrowind for a fully 3D game to get a feel for how editing in a completely open enviroment works like and the differences between working with terrain and wokring with dungeons.

After a bit of time for that, HL 2 or Unreal would be your best bet. These two games have some fairly complex tools, but they are very powerful and let you do alot. If you can make levels for these games quickly and that are fun, you can easily join any mod team.

gtkradiant is a great map editor for a lot of FPS games, mainly the Quake series. Quake 3 is a good game to make maps for.

I thought the Source SDK/map editor was easy to work with, you should check on some instructional videos off of the internet to get you started(google for them some are really helpfull).

Valve's Source SDK is an extremely efficient and complex tool to use, and is easy to use and understand, when compared to the tools provided by other developeers..
I recommend starting with Source SDK. Using you're knowledge you gained from working with this excellent set of programs you can begin to learn how you mod and map other games.
Modding however requires a great deal of time, patience and dedication.

Best games to mod on so far are HL2 and UT04. If you want a slightly easier time to develop mods you should go with UT04 or UT3 when it comes out as HL2 is harder to mod for, although its mod base is much bigger. If you really want to start off slow though, then got with quake II as that's by far one of the easiest games to develop mods on.
