So I just purchased a gaming computer, I'm new to the PC scene so I have a few questions. I plan on playing around with mods, is there a good website or forum where I can learn the basics? And what Anti Virus should I be using as I'm sssuming downloading mods increases the risk of getting a virus?

Modding as in making them, or just using ones that exist?

In either case, modding is very specific to each game. You'll get far more information finding a website dedicated to just that game or something like moddb.com to find mods.

As for an anti-virus, i prefer Microsoft Security Essentials. Lightweight, pretty effective, inobstrusive, and - most importantly - free.

Modding doesn't increase virus risk if you download for credible websites like moddb.com, nexus sites or fileplanet and the like. In terms of anti virus, avoid intrusive ones like Norton and go with something basic. Anyway, if you're reasonable capable then getting a virus is a difficult task.

Yeah download from well known mod sites like the ones mentioned and there are plenty of good AV's it just depends if you wish to pay for a good one or get a simple one and use 2 or 3 free products for complete coverage. If you want paid then Kaspersky, Zonealarm, and Bitdefender are among the best. Avast is a good free one and Malware Bytes can compliment it well and Windows 7 already has a good firewall but Zonealarm also does. I use Zonealarm Extreme Security and can't think of anything that beats it.

Ok thanks a lot guys, and yeah I'm talking about just using them. So once I download them how do I put them into the game?
