Is it possible for a modem to be not compatible with Vista 64 bit? Could it need updated drivers or something or does that not matter?

Does the modem connect via an USB port or ethernet - if USB, you will need to check with the modem's manufacturer to see if there is a Vista x64 drivers, if ethernet, then no modem drivers needed.

Is it normal for an ethernet port on a modem to still have the light on even after the computer taking that port is off?

Dunno - but with my old computers, it did do that, the computer was off but the LAN light of that computer was still on on the router.

Well can your LAN port be broken? The part of your computer where you plug in the ethernet cable, is it possible that it's damaged and your internet connection suffers from it?

Well if you're computer can't pick up any packets from a router, switch, hub, or via crossover cables, then either there is an IP problem, driver problem, but for a port to be broken on the motherboard seems far-fetched - never heard of a broken LAN port before...

Do you know of any reason why my computer would be able to detect a connection and say sit can go online but when I try to it'll become really slow and often disconnect? This doesn't happen with my XP computer but on my Vista computer it's quite prevalent.

Let me rephrase that. Is there any reason why a computer would not be able to detect a modem even once it's connected? I'm seriously thinking my LAN port is defective...is that rare?
