Just curious as many of the 360's games are ported to PC or vice versa and the PC is compatible with it so does that mean those games are preferred with that controller or any modern PC controller? just want to see what option is better before I make my purchase..

that aside I still plan to use keyboard/mouse for the FPS and such but some games I believe will do better with a gamepad.

Thanks,

pretty much any game today can use a 360 controller, some are easier than others like the games for windows live all have natural support for it.

Awesome with a gamepad, playable but nowhere near as good with mouse/keyboard

pretty much anything with 'Games For Windows' on the cover will have native support for the 360 controller... with a few obvious exceptions, like Civilization IV for example.

the only times you might run into problems will be with older games. most of them are ok, I've been able to play games from over 10 years ago with it. but I have run into a few problems. GTA: San Andreas refuses to recognise the right analog stick and D-pad for example, making it virtually unplayable. I've no idea why.

Vast majority of 360 ports are better with a 360 controller, that's the way it was meant to be played.

So basically the 360 controller works for mostly PC games that are also on the 360 and native PC exclusives should use a normal PC gamepad?

kidn of, but not necessarily. there's nothing to stop you using it with a very wide range PC exclusives, both old and new. most of if not all upcoming games, exclusive or not, should support it.

you should only buy another gamepad if and when you come across any compatibility issues with older games. you might not come across any at all, and for the games it at least works with (i.e. the overwhelming majority), it will work like any normal gamepad.

Not all games labeled as "Games for Windows" have native 360 controller support. It's not a requirement for the GFW title. I highly suggest looking at it per game, because there are some games that do have it that you might not expect, and some games that don't have native controller support even though they should.

If the Xbox 360 controller doesn't work, you might try the Logitech Cordless PS2 controller with a PS2 to PC converter. Excellent for emulation and almost all PC games. Logitech original Xbox cordless controller w/adapter also looks excellent. You can get the adapter on eBay, I did.

Have you guys heard of Xpadder? It's a program that can bind keyboard keys to a gamepad.... Supports almost all gamepads, and all of the recent ones

Practically makes gamepads work anywhere. Even RTSes and on the desktop.

Xpadder looks very good, will have to try that. I think version 5.4 is coming out soon.

You are better, speaking if you played a person with a controller and you had a keyboard and mouse, You would pwn them almost every time because of the faster and more accurate response times.

not really ... for ex, Gears of War and Mass Effect being are much better controlled with a M+KB. then there are lots of other games like Bioshock, Deadsapce etc are better with KB+ M. It generally depends upon the genre and the work done in porting the game

the ps3 controller works just as good as the 360 controller. you just have to make sure the game recognizes both analog sticks.

I can't really recommend using a Controller. Ever since I got My PC, i can't imagine using a controller for anything besides fighting games, and i realized that when i tried playing COD4 with it. just seems really odd.

I remember I had a big edge over opponents in Unreal Tournament for Dreamcast because they were all using the controller and I was using a M+KB. I would shoot them before they could aim for me. Don't want to play games like GTA:SA with a KB+M combo though.

In my opinion both Mass Effect and Gears of War on PC are more than just ports. Dead Space was a real mess to get working with a mouse. And when I finally did get it working, I still preferred to play it with a 360 controller. But I do agree about Bioshock.

It depends. It's basically comfort vs presision and speed.

it's not so great if you want to use the analog sticks. as all Xpadder does is map your controller to the keyboard, it just forces the analog sticks to function like a d-pad would.

it is a great program though if you're playing a game where analog sticks don't matter, like fighting games and 2d platformers. but third-person games in particular like GTA are a pain.

Actually there are some special caliberations for analog sticks I think. I tried it once on Spore creature creator, bound the sticks to camera controls, and it worked pretty well.

The big problem is the bumper mapping though. The program can't determine the force with which you push it, and that sucks.

Really ? Dead Space I have only played 3 hours or so, but it's pretty good with mouse once your V-Sync off. In fact , it's too smooth and makes the game very simple

I use my logitech cordless rumblepad 2 even with games that support 360 controllers and it runs perfectly.

I myself use an emulator called Pinnacle, check it out.

Exactly, you don't want a survival horror to be too easy. Sluggish aiming fits perfectly the 3rd person view, slow character movement and even the weapons. Not to mention that vibration is a nice bonus.

You can't rebind any of the controls when I tried it. It's missing some useful controls too. KB/M is the way to go here.
