The Engine

"The game utilizes the in-house IW 4.0 game engine, which is claimed to be a generation beyond the capabilities of the engine used in Call of Duty 4.The new engine can accommodate larger worlds, enhanced graphic detail, and more efficient rendering.

Infinity Ward has addressed the issue of enemies that continually respawn at different points of a level. The developer demonstrated that the game engine uses a "dynamic AI," which has replaced the respawn system and allows enemies to act more independently. These "smarter" enemies are designed to actively seek and drive the player forward through a level, and can break away from set behaviors such as following a designated route in order to attack more quickly. The player cannot depend on an enemy being in the same location because enemies will behave differently each time a level is played."

The Critics

All About The Games- Modern Warfare 2 Review(Single Player Campaign) 5 out of 5 Stars

It's difficult to review a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare2 some two days before it's officially released. Everyone wants to know whether it's any good or not. Whether it suffers from Infinity's Ward's notorious infinite re-spawns or not. And whether it could possibly live up to the high levels of expectations heaped upon it after the success of the last few Call of Duty games. But then at the same time, no-one wants to have any of the game spoiled for them either. Which makes it extremely difficult to actually say anything worthwhile and of substance without giving too much away. Though to be honest, having just experienced the whole of the single player campaign myself having managed to avoid most of the preview coverage, I wouldn't want to spoil anything anyway, as it's absolutely an experience that's best had with no prior knowledge or foresight. 7outof10- Modern Warfare 2 Review(Single Player Campaign) 9 out of 10 Stars

Forget the Paragon and Renegade Bioware model, throw out Peter Molyneux's reactionary NPCs in the world of Albion; with one early section in Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward has redefined the issue of morality in videogaming. The quality of design is without question; it's a set-piece that culls everything the developer does best – from rollercoaster action beat to lavish environmental presentation; the issue is whether you'll want to continue afterwards. Without going into specifics, this particular set-up will ask you to do something fairly common to videogames, but within a context and political setting that provide significant emotional gravitas. On one hand, it could be argued as entirely reprehensible – not to mention controversy-baiting – to include such imagery in interactive form; and on the other, it's thought-provoking enough to at least open discussion into the merits of depiction. "Turn up your 5.1 surround sound because you cannot get any closer to real war than this. Highlighted by a Hans Zimmer score, explosions threaten to melt your subwoofer as bullets and soldier chatter draw you deeper into the experience."

Should you join the fight and buy into the hype overload for this highly anticipated shooter? All told, Modern Warfare 2 crosses into the must-have category of video games effortlessly. It offers an unmatched shooter experience, a compelling story mode, a slick package of mini missions and a multiplayer which is pretty much unparalleled in depth. It's sure to satisfy the demands of its fan base, and anyone who considers themselves a fan of shooters in general should definitely pick up a copy. Infinity Ward says that the PC version is functionally identical to the PS3 and 360 builds that we played for review. However, we were unable to spend hands-on time with the PC game. When we have that opportunity, we will revisit Modern Warfare 2 and publish a separate review if there are any substantial differences. Until then, please consider this our definitive review for all platforms that the game appears on. Read more...

Cheat C C- Modern Warfare 2 Review 4.9 out of 5 Stars

Before Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released there were basically only two major options for the majority of FPS gamers. There was either the Halo series or one of the plethora of shooters that took place during World War II. Then Modern Warfare came seemingly out of nowhere and offered us a third option, a well crafted modern-day shooter whose story dealt with issues that were currently relevant to the world and also happened to include an amazing online multiplayer component. Thanks to a rather silly retail situation, you may have been playing Modern Warfare 2 since Friday whilst we've been clawing at a copy under embargo; in which case you'll already know that Infinity Ward's latest is not to be missed. Far from shunning the weight of expectation, the developer has honed its well-worn formula to a logical and achievable shine; crafting a campaign that surprises with scope, but rarely in mechanics. Special Ops

A new Special Ops mode will include two-player cooperative play. Special Ops mode will include several fast-paced action missions similar to Mile High Club which will be more difficult than normal campaign missions and will not be related to the main storyline. It will supposedly pick out certain parts of the single player campaign that "work well with co-op". Missions are unlocked by earning stars, which are acquired by playing levels at certain difficulties. Regular difficulty earns one star, hardened earns two, and veteran earns three. Missions will be divided by groups, called Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo, the last said to be the hardest. Within the groups there are types of missions such as "Breach and Clear" and "Elimination". There will even be special enemy types, such as those using riot shields, or even Special Ops exclusive "Juggernauts" wearing heavy armor. Read more to view Special Ops Levels...

The Plot

Modern Warfare 2 is set immediately after the conclusion of Call of Duty 4. The radical Russian Ultranationalist organization has returned to prominence under the leadership of Vladimir Makarov, a former associate of Imran Zakhaev with his own ambitions. Makarov has publicized Zakhaev's death as an act of martyrdom to garner support for his cause, enabling him to build a strong power base in Russia over the years. Fearful of Makarov's growing influence, the global community established Task Force 141 to counter the threat posed by the resurgent Ultranationalists.

PFC. Joseph Allen is placed in the Central Intelligence Agency as part of a mission to infiltrate Makarov's organization, which requires him to join Makarov on a terrorist attack on the Zakhaev International Airport in Moscow, Russia. However, his cover was blown from the start, and Makarov executes him and leaves his body for the Russians to find. Identifying him as an American and assuming that the United States funded the terrorism, Russia declares war and used an ACS module taken from a crashed U.S. satellite to crack NORAD's defense grid and slip hundreds of aircraft past the radar, invading the United States.

Meanwhile, Task Force 141, after recovering the ACS module in a failed attempt to prevent the Russians from cracking it, are sent to Rio de Janeiro to capture Rojas, an arms dealer supplying Makarov with weapons. When they're unable to be extracted due to the invasion, "Soap" MacTavish calls his informant from his SAS days, Nikolai, to help them escape.

After returning to the submarine, General Shepherd orders them to rescue Captain Price, Soap's mentor from the SAS, from a Russian gulag to provide assisstance in killing Makarov. However, Price wants to end the war first, and ignores Shepherd's orders to find Makarov. He leads 141 to a Russian naval base and

At the same time, the U.S. Army Rangers from Allen's old unit begin fighting back the Russians in the United States and helping with the evacuation of civilians. The Russians detonate a nuke in the upper atmosphere, destroying the International Space Station and frying the electronics in Washington, D.C. with the EMP blast.

Makarov's safehouses are narrowed down to a lodge in the Caucasus Mountains and a boneyard in Afghanistan. Ghost and Roach are sent to the lodge, while Price and Soap are sent to the boneyard. While assaulting the lodge, the team is ambushed, but defeats the attackers. Neither team manages to locate Makarov, but Ghost and Roach are ordered to find as much information as they can and take it. The team barely manages to escape the assault from Makarov's men, and meet with General Shepherd for extraction. As Ghost helps the wounded Roach aboard the helicopter, Shepherd says "Good, that's one less loose end," and suddenly shoots the pair of them, burning their bodies.

In Afghanistan, Price and Soap are suddenly attacked by Shepherd's men as they're attempting to fight off the Ultranationalists. As the three-way battle rages, Price contacts Makarov on the radio and asks for Shepherd's location. As an act of revenge, Makarov agrees and gives the remains of Task Force 141 his location. The pair successfully locate and kill him.

Not as much props as I use to get making people spend all their quarters in the arcade to beat me in a game of MvC. Nevertheless, I will update my information here.

Well since this game pretty much pissed a lot of PC gamers off due to no third-party dedicated server reports, I'm not even sure about purchasing about this game. In addition, the level capin the game is 18(9vs9).

Anyways, with that being said I'm still deciding to get it for the PC, but if not I'll check it out on the PS3 since Infinity Ward is using their own type of server to connect people online with. What's up with that?

What happened to everyone here that's refusing to buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and boycotting it after hearing there are no Dedicated servers?

If Infinity Ward can promise something like that then I would definitely check out this game if they manage to add some Dedicated Server support.

Any news yet that people find out about this issue? Because it's still very controversial right now

IGN review: "For those of us looking to pick up the game on PC, a few more things need to be noted about Modern Warfare 2. Infinity Ward has worked to make sure the experience on PC is identical to that of 360 and PS3, and while I'd say the team has succeeded overall, that's so a good and bad thing for various players. On the plus side, you're getting the same amazing experience as the other versions, and those that want a game that's easy to jump into online and connect with other players will find it with the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. What that also means, however, is that the PC version is also locked to the same restrictions as the other versions, so 32 person matches are a thing of the past, you can't create dedicated servers for match hosting, and that also will result in a lack of future mod support and PC-specific expansion. While this is definitely a downside for those familiar with the expandability of PC gaming and freedom that comes with a more open source platform, IW is essentially forcing the PC version to play by the same rules as the console offerings, and thus making sure anyone that wants to jump in and get the intended Modern Warfare 2 experience can do so across any system. It'll hurt the hardcore PC community, and but it's a decision IW made."

It'll hurt the hardcore PC community, and but it's a decision IW made."

Probably the most dissapointing game ever. As a huge CoD fan since the first one came out, an avid MW1 player, I was extremely hyped for this game. Now it has turned into the biggest failure and most dissapointing game ever for me, and it amazes me how they can ignore such a large player base of theirs like this and get away with it with no consequences. I don't like consoles, do not own one and don't plan to, I've always been a PC player. Sadly, it seems that the only good thing we still have that hasn't been reduced to a console port nowadays are MMOs and, well...

No dedicated servers makes it a no buy for me. no video settings stuck to xbox 360 res, which is bull. no lean no go. I was waiting for this for a long time and thinking this is going to be the best game. now it is a steamy turd. what a fail.

Seriously this boycott and the people supporting it are getting to be trolls. We understand you're mad but everyone has opinions and some people (alot of people) are going to buy the game and have a spectacular time. MW2 is going to sell very well and you can't do anything about that.

even with all those disappointing news, i'm not boycotting it, cos i'm not a hardcore clan-player. i just won't be buying it, cos i'm waiting for BFBC2. now that's a good cup of tea. i hope.

I've got the game waiting for me at home, and I can't wait to play it.

And no, I don't really care about how much we're all supposed to hate IW so we can all be cool PC gamers. I'm still playing it.

IW has disappointed PC gamers and if they continue this i'm sure COD will end for PC...(so far 6.6 avg score from users of GS compared to 8.9 in xbox and 9.3 in PS3)

Thats over 80 percent voting for the negative. Holy crap. Thats without a boycotting campaign. lol. They are succeeding in doing what the people thrashing L4D2 failed to do without any effort. rofl. At least L4D2 has more options this time around. Wow.

use your brothers steam. Can only play on 1 computer at the same time with the same account no way to do others.

not at the same time. if YOU bought it, YOU can play it. If you choose to forfit your right to play at that moment so your brother can, thats your choice. But why should 2 people be able to split costs on 1 game and both play it online? Pfft.

I just have a question on when MW2 is coming out on steam. It seems many people in North America are already playing, but the release date on Steam is Nov.11 so I'm confused. Can anyone care to explain?

Two specific PC reviews with critical scores.

Gameplanet- Matchmaking is as woeful as you would expect, and the campaign mode is too short and plays like it was designed by a committee. The Special Ops mode fails to lift the uniform score of this game to anything worthy of remembrance. Read more...

BigPond GameArena- If you told me three months ago we would be suggesting PC gamers hold off on buying Modern Warfare 2 I would have thought you're crazy. But if you are buying this game mainly for multiplayer - especially if you're contemplating serious competitive play at a high level - that's exactly what we're saying. The single player story is great, and if your idea of multiplayer is a quick zap with mates maybe an hour or two a week then by all means - it's great for your purposes. However if you're a Counterstrike, Battlefield, ETQW or even a COD4 player looking for a serious competitive platform to move to - best wait. Wait and see if Infinity Ward can implement dedicated server support. Read more...

I think the worst thing baout MW2 is the lack of players. SP is actaully quiet amazing even if its very short and MP would be very good if there were full servers. I don't and never have agreed with non dedicated servers and the low player cap. I just hope either:

A) the hardcore PC gamers accept MW2 eventually and start to play and live with the changes

B) IW Patches up and adds dedicated servers and more players

B would be so awsome and though i doubt it will happen, even if it does, i wonder how many Hardcore PC gamers have truely boycotted MW2.

It's available on Steam, but Modern Warfare 2 will not unlock(Be able to play) until November 12th if it was purchase through Steam bud. This was a direction from Activision.

I'm going to go a little bit off topic here, but your logic makes absolutly no sense. It's that kind of thinking that makes it possible for companies like IW, Activision and so many other developers get away with doing things their customers don't want or like. They'll end up buying the games anyways, so who cares? That's like me saying I will never-ever buy a LG phone or TV. Would you give me that answer then? No, because it makes no sense that I should BUY something and THEN realise that it's bad. What incentive do these companies have to change or improve their products then? Ppl will have to buy them anyways, just to know it sucks... As I saied before, there's enough information arround to make an informed decision on this game - it is not for me. They completly ruined what once was my favorite franchise. Yes, I know the SP is probably awesome, but I also know it's short and not worth 60 bucks, not even close to that. I also know that this game will sell like fresh water on a hot dry desert. Why? Fanboys who will buy the game and defend it even though they're not liking the experience (I know how it is, I've been a fanboy on several ocasions...), casual gamers who will buy the game because it's named Call of Duty and they saw it on TV, and ppl that use that logic you just saied. Sad thing is, the ppl that do believe you should play the game first and THEN make a judgement of it, are the ones who come complain on the forums, whining that they wasted their money and didn't get a quality product. Well, guess what? It wasn't Activision, IW or anyone else that did this to you, you did it to yourself. If you want to buy games without doing any kind of research whatsoever, you'll have to accept that alot of times you'll be giving money to companies that make bad products. No one forced you to buy that one specific product (or in this case, game).

So, what's the big deal about Allen's mission in Russia where you have to kill civilians? I mean this was such no big deal. GTA series has this issue. Slaughter civilians, kill innocent persons, etc. etc. Allen's mission has a choice. Choose to kill civilians, or just to bow your head down. That's no big deal right? If there's any I do not know, I'd like to know it please.
