The "Modern" FPS title does seem like a great gameplay opportunity, but does anyone agree that most game developers are "milking" this genre and that there is too many Modern style FPS games on the market. Currently the 2 most newest FPS online shooters are MW2 and BFBC2 which both are set in Modern times and use Modern weapons and vehicles. I honestly say I love Modern warfare and Modern combat style gameplay, but currently games out and games been developed all focus on "Modern" combat gameplay. Games I can mention like COD WAW (WW2) Battlefield 2142 (future) I loved these titles, It did not concern me that they were set in the Past or Fictional future, this made me more excited, but you never see many FPS online shooters set in WW2 anymore or Fictional Future settings. I loved Battlefield 2142's Robotic style vehicles and WaW's classic old fashioned looking maps, guns and mechanics from WW2 (but still was a modern designed and developed game technology wise). It's been awhile since those 2 game examples were released, but all I see from 2008 - present in Online Massive Multiplayer FPS titles is Modern Warfare and this frightens me. Do game developers find making Modern games easier then trying to make Past/future fps games? Does making Modern combat games require less work and cost less, or is it a bigger audience then the older/future fps genre? What do you guys think.
I'm not tired of them yet, but yeah.. it's just the popular thing right now. Even the new Medal of Honour will be modern combat. But I prefer the near-future aspect of 2142 as well, and I hope these guys eventually evolve... Ghost Recon Future Soldier is a great example of what's to come.
