Greetings,

this thread is dedicated to modern-military Real-Time Strategy games - titles of which their themes are set post WW2, and in some cases, after the Cold War and even a good little measure of futuristic feel.

I dedicate this thread to them for a couple of reasons; first, I think it's a bold decision from a company to try and create a modern RTS since the strategy & tactics used in today's warfare may be considered deeper than that of other eras such as the WW2 one (and there are a lot more RTS, and games in general, that are set in it), resulting in a tougher job of forming a functioning and enjoyable yet realistic and mature RTS system. The only game that I think is actually deep enough to allow itself to present the present advanced belligerence somewhat realistically is 'Company of Heroes', especially for its cunning use of the cover mechanic (and those of you who play games of even other genres like the FPS title series 'Call of Duty', know how important cover really is, particularly with today's more-than-ever lethal weapons).

The second reason, which slightly pertains to the first one, is that there are actually very few such serious games worth mentioning in my humble opinion - 'Act of War: Direct Action' and its expansion; 'C&C: Generals' & 'Zero Hour'; 'World in Conflict' (which classifying it as an 'RTS' may result in a conflict seeing that it's more of an RTT (Real-Time Tactics) title, though still does modern tactics justice as the genre name suggests); and 'Joint Task Force' (mixed opinions). Yep, that's about it unfortunately.

In this thread I'd be insterested to hear your opinions of how this specific genre (or RTS in general to allow more discussion) can grow out of its staleness that has been accumulated slowly over the years, and this may also serve as a place for discussion regarding the above-mentioned games, seeing as how their own forums are absolutely empty of topics.

For starters, I will ask a few questions:

- Do you think that a modern-military RTS based on the CoH's strategy system can be done justifiably? If so, what would you change/remove/add? Or are you satisfied with what the current market already has in store for us gamers?

- Do you prefer games with a large scale ('Total War' series/'WiC') or with a more individual emphasis (no more than a handful of influential units, e.g. CoH/DoW 2/AoW)? If the latter, do you think that the squad-unit mechanic better fits today's military theme, or you rather have single units like in 'WarCraft III'?

- This is a bit more personal... I myself have played plenty of CoH, and I feel like going forward in time a little. What game would you suggest that still has a firm, populated community? Do Generals, AoW, JTF or other games still have living online play?

This thread is for everyone... fertile discussion!

The squad mechanic is how the modern military functions. I think Company of Heroes did a great job at implementing it. It just doesn't make sense to have to control the movement of every individual soldier when you likely need them to travel in groups to survive anyway. It's inefficient and it helps create a large divide between players of different micromanagement skills.
