I just bought a new gaming computer...and need a new monitor. looking at a samsung right now. any suggestions on monitors you guys have heard of or use yourself? my price limit is about $500. how much does the contrast ratio have an impact on the quality of the images compared to the response time? thanks!

I use a 21" Hanns-G HDMI monitor (which was $200 after rebate at the Egg) and it's superb for gaming. Response time is only siginficant if it is abnormally high. You won't notice if the response is 8 milliseconds or 6 milliseconds.

As I suggested in your thread in the AV forums, yes, you should get the 226BW that you are looking at. It's great.
