Straight from Telltale:

We just put out a joint press release with LucasArts announcing not one, but TWO new Monkey Island projects headed your way: Tales of Monkey Island, a new five-part series from Telltale, and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, an enhanced rerelease of the game that started it all. That's right, folks. This summer you're going to be smacked upside the head by so much Monkey Island goodness you won't be able to stand it.

First up is Tales of Monkey Island, a five-episode series on PC and WiiWare that takes Guybrush on an swashbuckling new adventure across the seven seas. Our team includes a bunch of people who worked on the original games after a really long trip. Check out the official Tales of Monkey Island page for a trailer, screenshots, details on the story, and answers to all of your burning questions.

Then, LucasArts will be treating you to The Secret of Monkey Island like you've never experienced it before, in an enhanced Special Edition version that includes HD graphics, full voice acting, a new hint system, and an enhanced soundtrack. Visit the official Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition website for the full scoop.

Both games will be shown to press this week at E3, so be prepared for a lot more Monkey Island news to slap you in the face any minute now. Until then, spend some quality time on the Tales of Monkey Island website, where we've posted a trailer, screenshots, concept art, and a bunch of info about the game and the team behind it.

Can I hear a "HELL YEAH!"?

Neither did I! That's why I'm so excited. I always felt horrible about that, always planned on picking it up, but somehow never did. Now's our time to repent!

Wow .. both of the things sound amazing, I like that Telltale games are making the Monkey Island games instead of lucas arts , I would have preferred Tim Scfater or Ron Gilbert would have been a better choice, but good news none the less :D

I'm so... happy. I could just cry. It's especially great that it's an exact remake of the original Monkey Island. Also, it's with Dominic Armato as Guybrush, so you know it's going to have awesome voice acting. I have high hopes for the new Monkey Island since it's also with Dominic Armato, I hope it turns out to be awesome. *wipes tear out of eye*

People here will rattle on about Planescape Torment... but the most amazing experience I had, back in the day, with a PC game was the outrageously imaginative "Secret Of Monkey Island." Ron Gilbert explained how he used to love going on a ride at Disneyland called... The Pirates of The Caribbean... but that he always wanted to jump off the boat and go exploring through the town. The Secret of Monkey Island was his way of exploring that fantasy. I spent an entire summer playing this game, and loved every minute of it. Monkey Island, by the way, was the first 256 color VGA game ever released - one of the King's Quest games has incorrectly been credited with that achievement. The original Monkey Island was a 16 color EGA game, but LucasArts souped it up six months later with a special VGA version. On my then brand new VGA monitor, Monkey Island, displayed with an amazing palette of 256 colors, just blew me away. The thing is, I've learned that these memories are best left untouched. You CAN destroy a memory by physically re-visiting it.

I never played The first 2 monkey island games either. This news is excellent. I did play Curse and Escape and loved both ( yes, monkey kombat was not that bad. ). Both experiences were great. The only reason i coudnt get around to playing Mi1 and 2 is mainly because i find it very difficult to play the games. No voice acting , bad inventory system. The oldest Lucas arts game ive played would be Sam and MAx: Hit the Road and its mainly because its the first lucas game to use the mouse based interface which was perfected in Full throttle and Curse. This news is great for me. I wil finally get around to playing these master pieces. And those who want to engage their nostalgia will be glad to know that you can flip between the new and orginal graphics on the fly. This is the best news in ages. I also woudnt mind if the re-released Curse of monkey island with one change. Apparently the whole ending carnival area was completely cut short. They should add the parts they never had time to complete. The ending of that game was way too short and felt incomplete.

Yeah, great news. I've never experienced the Monkey Island series myself, but I've wanted to. How many episodic series does Telltale have now though? Five? At what point does it become too many?

Great news. Never played the Monkey Island games before, and after playing Grim Fandango I wanted to try them out.

Hopefully it will do well and the rest of the series is re-released. Like the way you can switch back to the old format as well.

Stan, the used-ship salesman, stands out as being a truly memorable character from the game - the funny thing is that I can't remember what 'the secret' was anymore?

I will never forget my reaction when I first experienced the "sword-fighting" gameplay element of the Monkey Island series. It's simply unforgettable in a good way. Based on the first post, I'm assuming that the remake, apart from the 5 episode adventure, is for the PC as well. Or isn't it?

It's probably gonna end up being disappointing for me.

Nothing can beat the first three.

Especially in this current state of the industry.

herman toothrot for me

monkey island.JPG

not sure exactly what the secret was, could be that it was a mythical island that required a special voodoo soup to be cooked to get there? or that lechuck and his pirate crew lived in the catacombs beneath the island?

There's a detailed preview on AdventureGamers.com - be warned though, it gives you the basic plot outline of the first puzzle or so (for those who dislike spoilers):

http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,1024

The best part of the preview:

Though I only saw a fraction of the first episode, I can confirm without hesitation that this is a Monkey Island game. The jokes are Monkey Island jokes. The situations are Monkey Island situations. I laughed more during this demo than I have in any single adventure game (or episode) I've played in the last few years.

I remember playing this on my Atari ST, every time I got to monkey island I got an error message 'memory heap full'. I could never progress, so, I got another half a megabyte (yep) soldered onto my Atari, it took a week, and then I could continue playing the game. Nuts or what.
