Yeah, totally agree. I don't understand this fantasy-fetish most RPG-devs have. Dragons suck. So do orcs, elves, generic Gimli-copies and halflings or should I say hobbits. I love Tolkien, do not love the generic worlds of most RPGs. Okey, a little too harsh there, I just want to see something fresh in RPGs. And I love sci fi.artur79
BLASPHEMY!!!! But, yeah, I agree there are few good sci-fi RPG's. BTW, fantasy and sci-fi are related. Very much so. They are the same genre. They just have different plot and characters.

I agree totally, we need more non fantasy RPGs i dont care where the setting is just something other than medievil fantasy with elves and dragons
Yeah, I'd like to see more science fiction rpgs, but I like my scifi to have a fantasy twist. I like psychic powers and stuff like that in science fiction. Like the star wars Jedi, the Babylon 5 Psycops, the System Shock 2 OSA and so forth.
Rather than more scifi rpgs, I'd rather have more scifan RPGs - how about a Warhammer 40K rpg (that isn't an MMO)? That could be so, so freaking awesome.

Eh, I think there are more differencies than just the plot and the chars in the game. BTW, you can say that about most games out there, no matter what genre they belong to or which settings the story takes place in. Before I say anything else... Would you care to elaborate on why you think sci fi is pretty much the same as fantasy?
Mfsa, you mean psionic powers? That's part of sci fi, although it has some roots in fantasy magic and stuff like that.
Shadowrun would be amazing right about now...
I would even like a regular modern RPG like Obsidian's next.
There's always Fallout 3 :P
It seems so simple to make a game in a Cyber-Punk universe. Why hasn't it been done yet?!? Shadowrun would have been a great vehicle. Hacking computers, using magic or modern weapons, etc... The game? they finally did turn out for the PC was a limp disappointment. Fallout, Arcanum, and others have been successful so it can't be because of the money. I just finished S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and loved the setting (I kinda missed what the RPG parts were though?) and am wanting more of the same! I need Fallout 3 to be greatness. Enough with the Orcs already....and no more World War 2 either!
There are some potentially good SF RPGs on the horizon, with Space Siege, Deus Ex 3, Mass Effect PC and Fallout 3. However, I'd put all of those in the Action RPG category.
I too would like to see something different in the RPG genre. I'm getting really tired of Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Dragons and all the rest of it. I'll be getting The Witcher Enhanced and Dragon Age when they are released, but after that I'm done with fantasy RPGs.
When it comes to the content of SF I agree - having space ships and mech walkers etc. doesn't necessarily make it SF. You could just as easily have a slightly futuristic but down-to-earth setting. Maybe a future earth where the sea level has risen, or where we are facing a new ice age, and all the problems that would bring.
I've always like the idea of a 'Day of The Triffids' style game, where you have to survive in the wake of an unforeseen disaster that isn't a nuclear war.
I wouldn't mind aliens in an RPG, as I'm of the view that there is other life in the universe, and it may be possible for that other life to reach us (and in the future, for us to reach out to other worlds).
I just feel like putting all developers in a box and shaking them up to reinvigorate their senses so they will stop recycling the same tired old races and ideas.
Yeah, I'm all for futuristic, sci-fi, cyberpunk, and even modern-day RPG's. I believe "High Fantasy" is the correct term for what we're tired of, the orcs, dwarves, elves, and dragons kind of medieval stuff.
I've recently been playing the Deus Ex games and Vampire: The Masquerade, and I'm really kind of sad that there aren't more games in similar modern day/futuristic settings
What was that awesome RPG that came out a while ago....dreamfall? that game was kick ass i thought. So were all the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Games.
You know, what i really want to see is a good MMOFPS. Maybe like an online version of STALKER. Man that would pwn.

Earth versus Minbari 3... 2... 1... Go!
You know what I want to see in Sci Fi RPGs? A little hint of cl@ssic fantasy.
You all know you want to see elves wielding giant proton cannons. :P
But seriously, we do need more Sci Fi RPGs.
i agree. EVE online i find to be a great game but its not really an RPG.elitegeek13
When I played EVE aside from the skills you can train while you are at or not at your pc. My impression in that game was that it seemed too realistic to be some regular rpg. That game money=power. Not grinding for hours on end to get the next level. Not having epic gear you spent 5 hours in some stupid dungeon to get. Money=power. Most things you do in the game is for money. Run a business. Manfacture things. Mine. And when you have more money you buy your power (or build it). I mean it would take forever to get that rule the world status. Titans arn't cheap. Probably take you longer to build one of those massive ships than to actually reach top level and best gear in everquest. That game is great. If my pc hadn't caught on fire I probably never would have stopped playing that game.

Wow, your rig caught on fire? That would totally suck!

Well, EVE Online is a MMORPG. It has a totally different goal in mind. With MMORPGs "fun" doesn't apply so much to the basic gameplay. Instead the most fun comes from advancing your character and keeping the player busy for as long as possible. Normal RPGs are more about the story and having fun with the actual gameplay. RPG and MMORPG are 2 totally different genres that attract totally different players. I think we are here talking about regular RPGs.
There are some sci-fi MMORPGs out there but they suck really badly to someone who likes RPGs and dislikes MMORPGs. MMORPGs lack everything that makes a good RPG game.

Titans can't go into empire space and take whole corps + a long time + lots of money to build. Titans are worth it for giant fleets but they take alot of support and not one single person would ever rule the galaxy in one titan cause it would be impossible to do so unless you own like 20 ALT accounts and no life. However things like carriers will take like a year to train properly and possibly more, carriers are like the new battleships of old and basically what everyone uses in 0.0 now.
Why I quit EVE tbh because it just became capital ship wars in 0.0 and Battlecruiser wars in empire.
glad to see quite a few other people are bored by all this fantasy stuff - i have no interest in it at all, but i'm increasingly moving from straight shooters to wanting more RPG, so i'd love to see more games that incorporate both, and sci-fi settings allow a great combination of, as people say, some scientific rigour along with some really intersting scenarios and, err, scenery
how about a Warhammer 40K rpg (that isn't an MMO)? That could be so, so freaking awesome.

yeah an offline SP RPG in the WH40k universe would be excellent. its such a rich world - i love dawn of war but a RTS doesn't capture that to the fullest extent.
the only game (that i can remember) that tried to make anything other than RTS/TBS in WH40k universe was fire warrior, and we all know how that turned out. but i did enjoy kicking space marine butt.
[QUOTE="Delius"][QUOTE="Alaris83"]We need some good cyberpunk RPGs. Can a developer out there hook us up?wslacker2
I second that, I'd love to see a true cyberpunk crpg.
Deus Ex??
Deus Ex is one of my all time favorite games, but its an fps/rpg hybrid. I would love to see someone use the 2007 aurora engine (The Witcher engine) to make one.
Hell, I still play Anachronox from time to time.Johnny_Rock
I loved Anachronox, one of those rare hidden gems.
What I want to play is a game like Oblivion but set in a cyber punk space high tech setting. i loved the gameplay concept of oblivion with its open-endedness and attention to detail. But help me God I absolutely was not the least bit excited with the dungeons and dragons type lore. Yes, yes I know, there's fallout 3. But come on, Fallout 3 is set in the year 2027 or something like that. How about something like the Star Wars or Mass Effect universe? Anyone ever play Dreamfall? I wish that had been a more open-ended RPG type game. I'd love to wander around space-age cities, listening to dialogue about future technology and cool stuff like that. Maybe even take a que from Final Fantasy XII, and make an open-ended sandbox RPG in that type of universe...flying ships, futuristic gadgets, other-worldy cities...I am simply sick and tired of the same dungeons and dragons crap with elves and orcs...zzzz
i wish i could make a game myself but i'm just one man...lol
