Good Day! Im looking into building a new rig and now I have another choice to make. How much RAM? On my last rig, I used 3GB of RAM and back in those days that was plenty. Now PCs are using a whole lot more.

Im tempted to use 4GB to save some money but is that enough? Or should I compromise a bit and go for 6? Or futureproof and go for 8?

I plan on using DDR3 for an i7 950at 1066Mhz

4gb is ample 5-6 is only really recommended if its in the budget after the 4gb ram is accounted for.. and the 8 + is if you have money to burn.

So 4 GB or 6? It makes sense to have atleast 4 gigs, but if i put 6 gigs will they even be used?

6 is probably the sweet spot. It's more than you need right now, but you'll definitely be glad you have that much down the road.

6gb is what you'll want in another year or two. So depending on how long you go between builds, you might want to consider 6gb

The question is only 'relevant' when using a 64-Bits operating system. Under a 32-bits OS, anything over 3GB is redundant. Like someone else already said, since you are going to go for an i7 950 and an X58 chipset, you'll be using triple channel DDR3, so it is most obvious to use at least 6GB (3x2GB), which is largely enough for gaming.

Only when you plan on using heavy RAM relient content like ZBrush or Photoshop, more RAM could be handy.
