What's the most epic game you've ever played? (In terms of scale/ambition/story /no.of enemies on screen/size of enemies/ size of world/ free roaming ability etc).

Ps: Consider all genres. Rts, for example, doesn't contain "Size of world etc", but can still be accounted for.

A combination of all of the things i listed (story/ world size etc). I forgot to add also the game thats made you feel the most immersed and involved in the story, like you're part of a movie or something.

And don't just scream WOW or Crysis, try to think a bit deeper before posting. Consider all aspects. Can't really descide for myself, but Rise of Legends is on the top-list, But it has some serious lacking in storyline. The massive battles is a huge +, though. Medieval 2 total war should be a top, if it wern't for it's complete lacking in storyline.

i'm thinkin assassin's creed. the world is emense, and it has litteraly hundreds of npc doing their own things the entire time. you can go almost anywhere in the end of the game, and the guards are pretty smart and will follow you to the ends of hte earth. the only thing i didnt like was the battles, they seemed too unrealistic. if one guy is surrounded by 20 guards, he should lose. no matter how good of swordsman he is, he should lose.

Any GTA game, especially IV as an overall, SA for a huge world with lots of diversity, a world that actually makes sense, every part of it, not like some games, like Oblivion.

Nice looking screenshots- haven't played that before, but it looks cool.

Hard to say about most epic game that combines all of those features. Baldur's Gate was one of the most immersive for me - good story, great characters, and beautiful graphics. For scale of wars, maybe Battle for Middle Earth. The original Unreal was one of the longest FPS games I've played (asa single game, not including expansions, new versions etc.), though it kinda lacked in other respects (story, epic battles, etc.), except for immersion - it did a good job with that at the time, being one of the first full 3D FPS games and also one of the first to have music that would adjust to what was going on in-game. Starcraft did a decent job with storyline and large battles, but I'm not sure I'd call it epic.

I'm really looking forward to Dragon Age - that could end up taking the cake for epic - great story, immersiveness, large world, epic battles - it looks like it may have it all! I'm also waiting for Batman Arkham Asylum - it won't be huge I'm sure, but if they did it right, the storyline could be awesome and really suck me in.

Cool question though - I'd be interested in seeing what other people come up with.

I agree that AC had some incredible "living" environments and was quite large. But the repetitiveness and the disjointed storyline (going back and forth between the sci-fi env. and the middle-age env.) kinda ruined the immersiveness for me. I still haven't finished the game - it's been collecting dust for like a year now. Maybe one of these days I'll go back and finish it...

Morrowind's world was pretty overwhelming at the time. That youtube video of a big Arma 2 battle makes that seem like the most epic game I've ever seen.

I was slightly disappointed by Rise of Legends. No doubt an Epic game though. I'm thinking HoMM3 can be pretty epic and spectacular.

besides the obvious Big scale rts or open world games, Baldur's Gate is also a pretty epic game with lots of exploration and quests and variety.

god i love that game....absolute classic. my most epic though would be rome total war. its scale and depth are immense and some of the battels that can accour defy imagination. supreme commander also comes to mind. it looks like a run of the mill RTS with just big maps...but when you see a tree and then start scaling it up in ure head it dawns on you just how big these units are. the smallest lvl1 constructor is bigger than my house. of course its all relative :P. playing all baldurs gate PC games back to back....thats also a very epic experience.

Medieval 2 Total War. Yes, it has no storyline, but you make the story - that's why the battles are so meaningful.

But! I remember when i got Wing Commander 3 - Heart of the tiger. Man that blew me away, the story, Biff (!) and the sweet graphics.

Maybe not the most epic game, but it always comes to mind.

KotOR 1

Morrowind

GTA 4

The characters are likeable and deep, the worlds are huge or universe made them seem so, the themes/story/lore were top notch and immersive.

Supreme Commander was pretty epic when I played it at a buddy's house. Medieval II: Total War would be another pick.

I rarely finish games, so I don't have much input. I thought too that Starcraft's campaign was epic. It's been a very long time since I beat it, but I was satisfied with it. I also loved KOTOR. You can feel the story going into climax. I should probably get KOTOR 2. I'm playing Oblivion GOTYE, main quest vanilla, and it seems to be building up nicely. On a side note, I also used to make custom maps with Starcraft and Age of Empires 2/ Mythology. 3000+ vs. 3000+. Epic - even if the map looked like crap...

Well, honestly, it is without a doubt Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for me. Play this immediately if you have not, (But then again, I could say every MGS was epic).

On PC? Probably Half-Life 2, those urban battles with the striders was so amazing the first time you play it, so that for PC. And of course, Allied Assault, first D-Day invasion in a game, it was so amazing the first time. Really, that whole game though.

Oblivion had a lot of epic moments in it as well. Kvatch, the end, the atmosphere.

Metal Gear Solid, Shadow of the Colossus, and the Warcraft series (RoC, TFT, and WoW).

If I had to pick one, it would be WoW, by far.

I don't know what to say. I love Homeworld (Cataclysm being my favorite) and I also love the Mechwarrior series for it's massive battles but as of right now, I have to go with X3: Terran Conflict. There isn't a game out there now that you can fly to so many sectors, create an empire (Trade or Military), and be at the reigns of it all. (Even doesn't count as much as I enjoyed it)

Final Fantasy 7 comes to mind... that game was amazing for its time with its graphics, cutscenes and amazing story.. Also, world of warcraft just the sheer mass of the game and how many other people play. 40 man raids, Alliance vs Horde raiding each others cities, different races and classes you can play. The replay value of world of warcraft is just insane. It kept me very occupied for a good 3 years!!

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault... the d day part... absolutly epic. Also Warcraft III + FT... amazing story... and the very first time playing WoW, probably the most epic moments ever. Actually being able to PLAY your WarIII characters, walk arround in major cities like Stormwind, 40 men raids? Oh 40 men raids, why did you go...

I've yet to really play a game that was just epic beyond belief, but considering of all consoles Killzone 2 had some impressive moments, but for PC I'd have to go with World of Warcraft sorry dude. It is massive.
