Depends what kind of hype, if you mean the publisher pimping the game and shoving it down everyones throat then Halo 3 is without competition. But if you mean developers telling everyone how "revolutionary and a new era for gaming!" kind of hype then I would have to go with Assassins Creed.
I can't think of any other game in production that had so many videos and trailers spamed into websites as Assassins Creed. Don't get me wrong, I want Assassins Creed but with the hype that's built it up I'm fairly certain I'll be dissapointed and it will have no replayability.
Crysis is a very close second though, my main problem with Crysis is that they've only shouted loadly about the graphics, the rest they havn't said quite as much about. Every feature mentions graphics but only a few mention the other aspects which just sound pretty standard. Sure I'll enjoy it when it's out though.
And I think the less said about Halo 3 the better.
Have fun.
Crysis takes the cake in my book.

I'm not sure that you can qualify Crysis yet as the only release we've seen so far is a beta. I'd wait till the full game or demo is released to call that one.
So far I'd have to call Bioshock the most overhyped this year, great game and all, but I'm not sure that it's so amazingly next gen as was predicted.
Hype Can make games seem worse, but the most over hyped is crysis all because graphicsdemon790
Did you read the previews? And I only hype the gameplay aspect of Crysis
Crysis takes the cake in my book.

Its not even out yet! Sure, it is hyped, but we dont know if its overhyped.
As for me, I still gotta say Supreme Commander was waaaaay overhyped. From a singleplayer RTS gamer's perspective, the game sucks.
Bioshock was overhyped as well.
For the game itself yes maybe bioshock was overhyped. The game is single player only and has virtually no replayability. Also w/o giving anything away the ending fight and ending were subpar. However I think the atmosphere, art style, and story live up to the hype. Also the message is a great one.
*Sort of Spoilers if you don't want to know the message or theme of Bioshock and some smallstory spoilers*
The game speaks out against adhering to rigid ideologies that exclude alot of beliefs and don't allow for differences of opinions. Specifically this game speaks out against Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. It takes alot from her book Atlas Shrugged which is a fictional story that sort of explainsher philosophy. They did a great job showing how such a society could go wrong because people cannot simply put away their beliefs and morals to adhere to something like Objectivism. Thus the crates of smuggled in bibles and the uprising that took place among the poor. I can't really explain the theory of Objectivism here nor the story of Atlas Shrugged because that would take forever. Atlas Shrugged is a HUGE book but it is a good read even you don't really agree with what it says (which most of it I don't) and the story it tells is actually interesting to read. So if you like reading and have a large amount of time to invest in a book I would recommend it.
Edit: Mispelled her last name. Also fixed spaces between words. They had spaces when I typed them but for some reason when I post some words stick together.
Agreed, for me it was the greatest narrative I've experienced in a FPS game. And using a game as a criticism of Objectivism was very interesting. The whole intelligent criminal destroying the utopia. I guess it didn't live up to its claim of being truly emergent, but for me it ranks as one of the best games I've played. For the game itself yes maybe bioshock was overhyped. Bioshock. Hype can ruin games. I mean it's still a great game, but not as good as everyone expected.RK-Mara
Whos fault is it for a game to be overhyped? The public is the one who creates the hype from previews, screenshots, and other information the publisher releases.
A problem with games being overhyped is they often cause people to ignore other games that are being released at the same time. Two Worlds was released on the same day as Bioshock and MOHA was released two weeks later. Both games were pretty good, but they didnt get any hype at all because all of it went to Bioshock.
Command and Conquer 3 is the most overhyped game of the year. The gameplay wasnt all that fun and it was behind the times of current RTS that have been released at the same time. Micromanaging collecting resourcesis a thing of the past where other RTS would just use points on the map for players to get resources without micromanaging.
definitely bioshock so far - people are throwing around words like masterpiece and art and evolution of the shooter, but bioshock didn't really bring us anything new, and nothing it did bring us was great - the few good things it managed were mostly bastardised versions of things which were great in system shock 2
bioshock is a good game, and for all i just said it's probably a worthy goty contender, but it is absurdly overhyped

and what about where the publisher - or in this case the developer - releases information which is being kind untrue and being honest a big pile of horse shoite... irrational drew constant comparisons between bioshock and system shock 2 all throughout the development process, and got even many of us bitter, cynical and hate filled bastards thinking, yeah, maybe we can get another game like shock 2
and it was all lies! lies!!!! our fault for believing? sure - but ken levine and the irrational/2k PR created one of the most powerful hype machines i've ever seen, and it was all based around pure BS... blaming the public is, usually, the right thing to do... but we aren't solely to blame

I remember Ken saying pretty early on that "Bioshock is a shooter first and foremost". I mean that alone would give you a pretty clear idea that this wasn't a RPG FPS like Shock 2. Also they mentioned pretty early on they were doing away with most of the major RPG components for a more accessible game. Also fixed spaces between words. That's a common bug in Gamespot's forums that has been around forever, and which Gamespot still hasn't fixed. Makes posting in the shared forums hell since we can't edit our posts there, so you have to preview everyone one of your posts and add in the spaces before you submit your post.

but i seem to recall ken saying boishock would appeal to people who want to play a pure shooter if that's what they wanted, and we totally support that, but for the people who want a richer, deeper experience, we've got that too and that's what bioshock is all about - his wording, at least as i remember it, basically equated to saying you can play a game like system shock 2 or you can just skip the story and blow stuff up... but it certainly didn't pan out like that because the game was in no way like system shock 2 in terms of combat mechanics or atmosphere, so those people who wanted another shock experience didn't get it
as for the rpg stuff, they didn't really say they were getting rid of it - they were bringing it to the surface, making everything apparent to the gamer instead of running under the hood - and they did that well, i think the gene tonics work much better than the stats and numbers system of SS2... but they never once suggested they were getting rid of the rpg elements, just making them - as you say - more accessible... but by more accessible, what we're really saying is utterly bastardised to the point of non-existence... the game had no - none - zero rpg elements, you can use every gun and every plasmid from the start, and the entire concept of improving your character is pretty much fundamentally negated by the fact that you can use everything, collect everything and afford everything
if ken had said, this is a braindead a to b run n gun shooter with no real atmosphere; about as much roleplaying as quake; with moral choices that have no impact on anything at all; the masterpiece horror of SS2 replaced by "emergent" gunplay which you won't even bother with because the wrench & electrobolt is the most efficient way to fight enemies; and the only real things drawn from system shock 2 are directly copied so if you ever did play SS2, you'll get no joy from the plot at all, because you already know what's going to happen
granted, his job is to make people want the game and honesty is never the best policy, but i at least would say he & irrational & 2k really, really sold the game as something it was absolutely not... and it was partially our fault for believing, but even drawing one comparison between ss2 and bioshock was - in the minds of players - turning the game into something it wasn't

Hey man, we can only hype what we see. Who hyped Bioshock? I sure know I didnt, but Gamespot did with their "Bioshock-preview-one-a-week-for-8-months Extravaganza!"
But I do agree most games dont get the coverage they deserve. Two Worlds I dont really know much about; played the demo, didnt like it. But other games definately deserve more attention.
Crysis takes the cake in my book.

Probably seeing as how CoD4 and UT3 both have great demos and wern't hyped at all. Seems like WiC/Crysis are the only games that were really Hyped (Maybe CnC3 or SupCom).

Yes, I see your point now. But is the plot of SS2 and Bioshock really that similar that it spoils Bioshock's or are you just saying it's predictable? I never got around to finishing SS2...FYI ive played Crysis single player in alpha right now, its only 2 levels.... but this games hype is worth it ... its amazing and totally blows the socks off of halo .... Orange box is the best purchase i have made yet this year gaming wise even though i owned HL2 and EP1 .... i just gave them away to my GF as an extra present lol XD ColdfireTrilogy
Good to know
To me, it's got to be Supreme Commander. I can't remember of another game I played so little before uninstalling it. Would have been better if they just did a straight-update of Total Annihilation + Core Contingency. I've already played the relatively sleeper RTSes Anno 1701 and Settlers 6 much more than I did Supreme Commander.
I thought Bioshock was one of, if not the best gaming experiance I've had in years, and an incredibly reassuring game to come to surface in this day and age.
Bad luck to you lot, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest way with Bioshock, mainly because it had one of the most thought-provoking storylines I've ever seen.
In the current world of MMO-Grind-this and Xbox-Achievement-points that, I thought Bioshock was a brilliant reminder that there are more to games than just empty competetion.
On a side note - best voice acting I've ever heard in a game as well.
