I just bought Dead Space today after reading all the good reviews.. and wow, what a letdown so far. This feels like one of the least-polished console ports I've ever played. The Controls and camera positioning are some of the worst I've ever seen. The game looks OK, and I mean just OK, not very good for a 2008 PC games. Overall I feel like EA must've paid somebody off to give this game a 9/10, because so far I don't even see a 7/10. The atmosphere is the only real redeeming quality so far. I don't even know if I can force myself to play through the game with a camera angle and controls like this!

I actually felt the same, all the fancy ratings it got seemed to be overrated IMO.

I can't really keep up playing with such a bad camera, but I guess im one of very small minority who has difficulty with it, entire gaming community was fine with it.

I stopped noticing the camera about an hour through the game, I also played up close to a 52" screen so I was a little more absorbed into the game I guess. cant comment on the controls since Ive only played it on the 360 but I thought it was perfect.

Yeah, if you play on a low resoultion (lower than 1024x768ish), the camera can be very frustrating. That doesn't make the game overrated.

I played on 1920x1200 and it was fantastic. Turning off Vsync fixed the laggy controls. It's just like any other 3rd person shooter.

I'm playing it at 1680x1050.. which isn't generally consider a "low resolution," so I don't think that's the issue. I guess I don't like 3rd-person shooters then. Very unnatural altogether..

I don't know what you're used to, but the controls aren't good by my standards. The guy moves like a machine too! I can barely turn when I'm walking. I played with the mouse sensitivity and got slightly better response, but not nearly good enough. I do have to thank the earlier poster who suggested turning VSYNC off, as that did make the mouse control slightly more fluid, but I still feel like I'm in a straightjacket just trying to look around.

It's not a run and gun shooter, so it would be stupid for it to handle like one. The controls work perfectly within the scope of the game and any competent person should get past the learning curve in a few minutes. As for visuals, they are fantastic at 1680x1050. Screenshots you take might not always look the best due to some AA issues, but in-motion the graphics are well above what could be considered "standard" for the release date. I don't know what game you were playing, but you're obviously missing something, so don't come on here and attempt to discourage people from trying an incredible game. Beyond that, the discussion board is not the place for you to post your personal reviews - as flawed as they may be - that's why there is an entire section of the site and each game page devoted to user-submitted reviews. There was nothing here to discuss, you're stating opinions of gameplay and graphics, what are you looking for in terms of discussion? The only outcomes are people say "Yeah you're right" or "No, you're a blind confused idiot", both of which can be accomplished via the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down on your user-review.

The camera is fine.

Complaining about the camera is honestly not a valid complaint for this game. That is like complaiing about the first person view in a first person shooter.

Survival Horror Dude in a clunky suit ... something tells me it wasn't meant to handle like a typical FPS. I personally enjoyed the game quite a bit. Only thing I didn't like was revisiting locations over and over.

The V-sync "remedy" is very useful, but it puzzles my mind why it even has to be done. Though people will say that Isaac moves in a not-so-agile manner due to his suit, I have no problems with his mobility. Sure he's slow, but i think it would be just wrong if he could "bunny-hop" all over the place. Overall, I enjoyed the game but IMO, it's not really worth a second playthrough. Still gets an 8/10 from me.

if go by GS's review, yeah, 9.0 that's say that this game is better than The Witcher.

for a horror survival version of SS2, 9 is too high of a score.

as for its graphic, it's decent for a console port or multiplaformer. not as good as the like of Batman:AA and RE5, but not crappy as the like of Spider-man:WoS.

Dead Space was superb. Though I agree about the camera. However, it's not horrible, just not what pc gamers are used to. Vsync off is a must, though.

Dead Space is an excellent game, guys!! The uneasiness with the camera controls is what makes this game an exciting survival horror game.

Jeez, people game quality=/= pc controls. Bad controls doesnt mean the game is garbage. I played much more crappier games than dead space. Infact i belive dead space is th closest thing to ss2. I got NOTHING to complain about. The progression is fine. There are diffirent objectives to complete as you move along the ship, diffirent enemy types and weapons. Depending on the difficulity the game is more or less survival. The camera is fine just turn v sync off. Seriously you wanna see bad control? Try ghostbusters . Dead space = best new ip this gen 9/10 for me.

I really loved dead space, the controls are supposed to be like that. Why is it if any game doesn't follow a certain formula and does something a bit different you get lots of people crying that its no good. Yet in the next breath they complain that devs no longer try anything new. Its a survival horror, this is how they play. If you don't like it then maybe this genre isn't for you but that does not make it a bad game.

I didn't like Dead Space at all... I just didn't find it scary. The controls were not bad but certainly not good. The camera should've been 1st person like any GOOD horror game. Overall very mediocre game. Heck I had more fun with Gears of War and I despise GoW.

Silent Hill and Resident Evil aren't good?

I don't think a game is not good because it's not scary. That's the Saw generation mentality. I found Dead Space to be ****** up, not scary, and I liked it.

Could it be another case of I don't like that game because it's a console port?

Survival horror? I absolutely love horror games, as long as they're 1st person. A 3rd person game has never scared me, and if a horror game isn't scary, there's just no point.

Baranga

I've never liked either of them, tbh.

Horror games, for me, have to be scary. Otherwise what's the point? Bad controls and cheesy storylines? No thanks, I'd rather play a traditional adventure game. Dead Space didn't do anything for me, I'm not affected by "BOO!-IN-YOUR-FACE-WITH-LOUD-NOISE" scares anymore.

It's not directly because it's a console port, but I've found over the years that I often tend to dislike games from consoles, not just because of they're console games, but because they just don't appeal to me. But, there is no denying that some games could've been A LOT better if they were made for PC first and not consoles. It's not being elitist, I have just noticed that pretty much every game I've ever liked happens to be a PC game.

This is what im talking about, I don't want every game to be yet another first person shooter. I know 3rd person isn't anything new but its a welcome change of pace no and then. I also found dead space to be very atmospheric and immersive and so thus scary. (Sorry about previous post, what happened to the ability to edit or delete?)

I don't want them to be first person SHOOTERS. Why is it that every time a game takes place in first person, people instantly call it a first person SHOOTER? First person perspective is not allowed to be used in any other genre than shooters now?

For example, Penumbra is one of the best horror games ever made, and it's in first person, but you don't have any guns. In fact, you have no weapons AT ALL. Is it a first person shooter?

Really, I find 3rd person camera to be fine for every other genre, except horror games. I just can't get immersed to it. I just keep thinking "oh I'm just controlling this random guy and there is a cameraman somewhere there. I'm just watching an interactive horror film. *yawn* oh well." Every single 3rd person horror game has given me that feeling. When it's 1st person, I get the feeling that I'm that guy instead of just controlling him. I don't get scared if I see some random dude get attacked by a monster or something, even if I am controlling him.

I agree, for horror games it doesnt match well, i was annoyed for a very short while by the camera, i mean compared to other bad 3rd person camera games i played: alone in the dark, obscure 2, resident evil 5 and ghostbusters, dead space has the best one. I bet they did the 3rd person thing to represent the hud on the suit. In any case i still think its ok because of another game i played, ghostbusters which has the worst control ever created in the pc version, it doesnt even controll right.

I can see where your coming from however, I have never tried penumbra but do know that 99% of the first person games i have played have been shooters that all seem to follow a very similar formula. This is why i hate hearing someone saying a particular game other than first person should have been first person. I actually managed to get immersed as i said in the game despite being able to see my character so it wasn't an issue for me. Each to their own i guess, what would you consider a scary game?.

3rd person games use the dream logic - the perspective is detached from your body, yet you retain full control over your body's actions. You also usually perceive the dream from two different angles - your "floating self" is somewhat aware he's different from your physical avatar.

Yet we all get scared ****less in dreams. Empathy towards your physical avatar plays a major role in this kind of nightmares, coupled with the distorted perception of the dream world.

Games rely on empathy alone, since the brain is fully aware that the game is not reality. I easily relate to the on-screen character, so I don't feel like the cameraman.

I guess I have a big, warm heart if I'm able to put myself in another's shoes so easy.

I kinda liked it, granted, I never competed it, someone lent it to me for a few days, but I found it fairly nice, and pretty much in line with the survival horror genre. sluggish controles, 3rd person perspective (Altho I prefer "fixed camera perspectives" like the first Alone in the dark games, and RE, SH)

If a game gets too responsive it often looses some of the tension, you rarely need to feel the urge to yell at the character to get the f*ck away.

I have considered to buy it to see it through.

I do understand the TCs point of first person perspective tho, it "can" be used well, but mostly aint, SS2, Penumbra, certain places in VTM:B works well, but in most games it does not.

Oh and the most overrated game I ever bought: Far Cry 2... dear lord... what a load of... well... good engine, good premise, horrible horrible execution and horrible structure.

What would I consider a scary game? Hmm let's see

Well Penumbra for sure. One of the only games that had me reaching for Esc since I couldn't handle them without pauses.

System Shock is another one up there. Especially the second one. Up until Penumbra, I had never been so scared in games. Well, I still kinda think SS2 is scarier than Penumbra. There is never a place where you can feel truly safe.

STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl. Mainly the underground labs but pretty much everywhere at night (especially if you don't have night vision). I absolutely love the setting and it gives it a very scary mood.

Alien vs Predator. Mostly the marine campaign. It's not really that scary but it has it's moments.

Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of The Earth. Until you get guns, the game is very, very atmospheric and scary. I mean wow.

Clive Barker's Undying... a bit.

Condemned Criminal Origins. Much, much scarier than the overrated FEAR (I still think FEAR is a very good game, just not that scary)

Cryostasis. One of the more recent horror games. It's good but nothing amazingly scary.

Thief series definitely has scary parts. Pretty much the whole of the first one (excluding the human missions) and a few missions from the third one (Shalebridge Cradle. It has been called the scariest level of all time.)

And uhh.. yeah. Nothing else that I've played has scared me.

I thought the graphics were good and the controls felt good for the type of game it was and the suit you had on (for mining).

Dead Space does have a unique camera angle. I just use to it after an hour playing it.

Way ovverated...7/10 tops.

It's got good atmosphere, great sound, and a good graphics. But once you get past the first level the gameplay becomes a bore and the scariness wears out quickly.

I also hate mini-games that require me to smash my contoller in order to prevent half my life from disappearing. Those little alien turds are very cheap.

Wow, really nice explanation! I had never thought of it that way. I guess that's why I enjoy 3rd person games so much.

I dont think its over-rated. I thought it was a good game, so far at least, I took a break currently on Chapter 6. Playing Last Remnant now.

Anyways, I thought the controls were crappy at first to, but I downloaded a controls template file that improved the controls and I increased mouse sensitivity so the mouse responds better.

[QUOTE="hartsickdiscipl"]

[QUOTE="GazaAli"]the camera can be annoying sometimes, the controls are good, the gameplay is good, its repetitive ,8/10.denter21

Who the hell says I'm "looking" for any particular type of discussion? I'm stating my opinions on a game, and it's open to whatever type of discussion people want to have. This is the "PC & Mac Games" Forum, afterall! This is exactly what this forum is for. Maybe I will post a personal review as well, but this forum IS the right place to discuss mine, and anyone else's opinion of games. I think the game is missing something big at it's core. It doesn't feel complete to me... that's just how I feel about it. Don't try to change that by insulting my opinion.

Sorry man, but the visuals are NOT "fantastic" by current PC game standards. They might have been fantastic for the Console players (no offense), but the textures and bad AA support make it look sub-par IMO. I'm not "missing" anything. I've played everything from the orginal Doom, to Grim Fandango, to System Shock 2 and Crysis.. and this game is not polished enough IN MY OPINION.

Of course there are going to be plenty of people who disagree with me! That's fine.. But you won't see me berating someone for using the PC & Mac games Forum to discuss PC games.

I was late to the party for Dead Space - and for that reason the game had been a bit hyped for me. (For people who played it on release day, or thereabouts, I believe that Dead Space was a bit of a sleeper hit).

But when your expectations are elevated there's a greater chance that you're going to feel let down. I can only say that I made it to the end of chapter one, but that I never advanced beyond that. I keep on meaning to play it, but other games are getting in the way.

You know, I kind of agree - Dead Space is a bit over-rated.

The game is fine enough, for me at least I didn't find anything wrong with it except being repititive
