I still say Deus Ex.
80% of people cant get past the first level because they say it sucks and it takes like an hour (Liberty Island).
10% of the people say "Oh yea, Invisible War? I love that game" and I shudder, because that was a terrible, terrible sequal to an otherwise perfect game.
Deus Ex is, to this day, one of my most cherished games ever. While it didnt score poorly, I still think it deserved more critical praise than it did, and definately deserved to be played by more people.
i strongly agree with this....I still say Deus Ex.

Really? I didn't know that many people hated it because of the first level... I actually really liked that level :|
As for me, just off the top of my head, I'd probably say the first 2 penumbra games. Very, very good for a very cheap price. Wish more people would try them.
Deus Ex isn't underrated... it gets way too much praise, in fact.
My vote goes to Anno series (Anno 1602, 1503, 1701, 1404). Great games, very intricate and beautiful, yet barely anyone talks about them.
Also, special mention to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Without a doubt the best TBS ever, to this day, and although it did get great scores, you never hear talk about it.

True that... The most underrated game ever? I don't really know, but Timeshift and Stranglehold were underrated.Far Cry 2
I think a lot of players put it down because they tried plowing through it like a typical shooter. The game forces you to think outside the box and tackle the missions in a variety of ways. I still have lots of fun with it :)
Muxika
Im going to go with Medal of Honor Allied Assualt on this one, I remeber playing this online from day one, 56k and all, and I played it with a friend of mine, but after going to college with other "gamer types" none of them had played MoHaa, the game is dying out now though, shame really...

I really want to play Deus Ex and Far Cry 2 now! Are they Vista-compatible? Also, that Stronghold game by SIS looks very interesting. Has anyone run it successfully on DOSBox? I played MOH:AA. Solid game. A bit short, but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.AnsidionSure are. Deus Ex might need to be run in 95/XP compatibility, but it should run. Far Cry 2 can run on DX10, but it all depends on how powerful your PC is.

Deus Ex is an Unreal Tournement-based (1999) game engine. It scales very well
Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time, so I'm going to vote for that as well.
That being said, Advent Rising gets no love imo, and it saddens me that they'll never complete the trilogy. It's just pure fun and non-stop, over-the-top action with an equally enjoyable story.
I think both Deux Ex and Myth were quite well percived and talked when they where out. It is just today you do not hear about them because their that old.
In my book, the most underappreciated game is Kohan (and Kohan2, but it was less fun). I mean, how many of you know about this game?

Find me one person or a link etc, who thinks that Invisible War is a better game. I've never heard anyone say that. You might surprise me! Even though GS only gave it 8.0 (?) I think I've heard people like Ocampo refer to it as a classic. (But yes it should have scored higher)
To the question: Thief: Deadly Shadows is a much maligned game and because it has additional load screens people think its a dumbed down POS, even though exclusives like STALKER have probably more loading screens.
My point being that DS - although not perfect - has some amazing qualities that are overlooked, such as the level design, still some of the best you will see in any game. People were more interested in the fact that it was released on Xbox and not just PC.
The effort to send the designers overseas and take photographs of Cathedrals and what not is visible. The storyline, voice acting are top notch. Even the visuals - leagues ahead of the other two games are impressive. I love the way that the flame effects, with guards carrying torches is not just pleasing to look at it, but the light is another form of the game play and a challenge to overcome.
Darklands -- it is one of the finest rpgs made with a lot of thought and detail amd cool design. the only time I heard someone else mention it is was one someone said, "I want to get that game, couldn't find it any where" Another would be Arcanum ---- personally I see it having one of the most interesting premise and a amazing world, but gets ignored quite a lot. To TC : the main reason i think behind the success of Myth 1 & 2 was their amazing level design which added a lot of variety and challenge without feeling tedious. It is not so easy to do that, take Myth 3 for example .... started feeling tiring pretty soonnaval
I agree 100% with Darklands. It's one of the most unique and inovative RPG's made.
One of the first true open world / open ended RPG's out there.
The setting based on 'ture' medieval beliefs and supertitions rather than the typical Tolkien'ish fantasy.
The use of watercolors gave the game a really cool atmosphere.
I have three:
Far Cry 2, not nearly as bet as everyone lets one, a very good shooter in fact
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault: way ahead of its time, overshadowed by all the huge shooters of 2004
timeshift: i found it to be very fun and dynamic in gameplay with stellar visuals.
Way ahead of its time? So if they released it after HL2 it would be better? Weren't all the jungle levels really tiny? Thats just what I've read...I have three:

I loved that game way back when. Great for its time, which admitedly was a long time ago. It got me hooked into the Riftwar saga.Betrayal at Krondor should be at the top of the list whenever people talk about the best RPGs ever made. Sadly, it's usually left out.

Freedom fighters and half life 2 (obviously)

Half life 2 is amazing and deserves huge amounts of praise, but i would harly say its underrated/underappriciated. i mean its widely recognized as being one of the best games ever created. I mean unless that just happens to only be the opinion of all of my friends and all of the websites i go to, an nobody elses. haha. ?? im pretty sure HL2 is very widely appriciated.
I've always had a soft spot for Arcanum. But I'm also a sucker for anything steampunk, well except for Damnation *shakes fist in air*
Sacrifice and Battle Realms are some others.

godfather 2 also, it is really underated, like come on, 4.0? im really addicted to it

eh, the game was really buggy and repetative. underrated at a 4.0? yeah. maybe they should have given it a 5.0 instead. haha.
either way it shouldnt be played.
It looks like it has graphics from a ps2 game...[QUOTE="jettpack"][QUOTE="dead_p1xel"]

I agree that the smallish community is a detriment to the experience. But the game itself is a fun, fast paced competetive FPS, with EXCELLENT artistic design, and offers a large variety of modes and maps, especially with the Titan pack expansion.
Combine those things with all of the really great fan made content produced by the Make Something Unreal Contest (all of which is really excellent, btw, i think i have over 100 good multiplayer maps total) and a full unreal engine 3 editor to boot and you have are compelling and involved multyplayershooter thats worth the money.
i got half way into the game and then decided i hated it though yea, that first level was god awfulI still say Deus Ex.

Yes, UT3 was underwhelming. Its levels were awe-inspiring at times in terms of graphical design. Other than that, the game didn't hold much appeal for me.[QUOTE="Ansidion"][QUOTE="pvtdonut54"]
The campaign for that had next to no point. It was just going around killing soldiers, capturing flags, and linking up nodes. Hearing "Kill Streak" and "Ultra Kill" every minute made it seem that the game wasn't very mature either. And for being a multiplayer game, it is quite bad community wise, for being so small.jettpack

Battle Realms.
It was a very fun and colorful RTS game I spent plenty of hours playing back in the day. The single player campaign gets repetitive about half way in but the gameplay itself in a standard multiplayer/skirmish game was pretty addicting.
Luckily one of my good friends introduced it to me when it first came out, and I bought it within a week. If he hadn't, i would have ended up missing out on this gem like many others have.
I especially liked the unique way that units were trained.
