If you go AMD, you can get cheaper quad core with mobo, but I'm not a AMd person, so hopefully soembody else can assemble a AMD build for comparison.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.205337 It's a combo deal, more than a dual core. less than $200. Keep in mind that it'll take DDR3 memory though.

If you're looking for DDR2, there's http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.211695 which is essentially the same thing, but with DDR2 memory and less of a combo discount.

Edit: The Phenom II X3 is probably the best bang-for-buck processor out there. It can overclock really well, too. That board also has crossfire if you're running an ATI card.
