Which brand makes good motherboards? I'm looking for reliability, not extra performance.

EVGA and Gigabyte.

I agree with that but EVGA doesn't make a lot of MBs, the same with BFG. Asus is crap. They are exploiting this popular myth that is circulating the world that their garbage is actually good. It's all a part of a conspiracy. I'm using a Gigabyte board without problems so I trust them but now I heard they have teamed up with Asus? How does that affect them? What are DFI boards good at?

DFI boards are exceptional overclockers, and generally have good layouts.

I don't know if Asus is as bad as you say or not... but that Striker Extreme board is just a total rip off. 400$?! Riiiiiiiiiiight! Anyway... add MSI to the list of good motherboard manufacturers.

If you search for it you can find a lot of actual end users talking about Asus products. I have never had a single Asus product from MBs to DVD burners that lasted for longer than a year. And their RMA takes over a month because they will spend weeks to try to "fix" it first. Then you get a refurbished board back that burns up in 3 months. And this cycle continues until you are completely fed up with them and get a new board. My problem with MSI is that I'm suspicious of their quality because of their price and the huge amounts of extra bonus software/hardware their cards come with. Like BFG doesn't even have any game bundled and cost more than their video cards. When I bout an MSI card back in 2003 they gave me 10 CDs. Why do they always come with so many extras? Because that's all going to come from somewhere.

What's special about their "lan party" series? They have a couple of "series" that I don't know what's the difference of.

Lanparty boards are just made for gamers...they're fast and are laid out to allow better cooling, and are good overclockers. Plus, they look awesome. Does anyone have any experience with Abit boards?

What about their infinity? What does that do? And so if I want the best performing/reliable board then I sould get their Lan party over the other series? I have an NF2 Abit, reputedly the best NF2 board ever made. But Abit has been going down hill since then, and didn't they go bankrupt last year and got purchased by some other company? So I would doubt that they are as good any more.

Yea, I heard something about some turmoil within Abit a year ago. There was huge drama on Abits forum about it a year ago. I hear they're being made by ECS now...which can't be good. Of course, that is just a rumor so don't quote me on it :P Though I've had an Abit IC7-G for about 2-3 years and it's been rock solid performer. Maybe it's not state of the art, but it's as stable as they get. I'd have to look more into that whole abit drama before I buy from them again...but I don't have any regrets with this board.

Their Infinity boards are excellent as well. But the lan party boards have bioses with more overclocking options, and are usually better overclockers. I have an NF4X Infinity board, and it is the absolute best 754 pin Athlon 64 motherboard on the market. It overclocks like a dream...

If you want reliable/stable, generally Intel's are good at that too. =P Stable at stock speeds to me has generally meant Asus or Gigabyte... DFI makes awesome boards, but they're leaned towards the overclocker/tweaker, with more options than you'll know what to do with. That's usually a good thing, though. All the mainstream makers should be able to make stable boards in general - there's just always exceptions to the rule, for all the companies. Do the research on the individual board you want to buy.

I was disappointed with the P5B. It started acting strangely at bootup with just a small overclock. I haven't tried Asus's more expensive models yet though...

Only the Platinum - the lower-end board isn't much to speak of.

You can't really go wrong with most brands. I suppose one's to stay clear of may be such brands as 'PC Chips' on the cheapest end of the spectrum. I've also heard that ASUS have quite a few dodgy boards and are using their name to sell a lot of inferior products so that may be something to watch out for.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. All of their stuff don't last longer than a year but people are just still believing that ASUS=GOOD. MSI always comes with the most stuff so is it a good idea to go with them?

Ive heard really good things about the Foxconn board that is in Gregoroths sig. Im also looking at the Gigabyte DS4, both as sub £100 boards with decent reviews for my C2D setup.

The DS4 is a quality board. My Foxconn was also highly rated for being about the cheapest for the features it has. The one thing I would have to say though is at first I had a problem with that it didn't 'like' the PSU I was using, or vice versa. I had to swap it for a less efficient, lower wattage model and have had no problems since. This is up to the PSU manufacturers to fix as new revisions of various problematic PSU's are now trouble free. This wasn't a one off case with this mobo though. Some ASUS, DFI and Abit boards had trouble's too. As long as you get a recent PSU, you should be ok, not that you would encounter a problem. It's just something to remember though!

Why are there so many mother board models? It takes weeks just to research all of the same type of boards that Intel has to offer. For processors and GPU it's so simple to choose.
