Well circulated air flow will keep you from getting sick.

Make sure you have enough lighting in your room, so not just from your monitor and make sure it's not directed in your eyes. and yeah opening your window and not increasing the room temperature helps.

I've had similair problems before then I read my GTA manual and it said what I should do to prevent getting sick.

This is very common and the solutions are simple. 1. Ginger Root is a wonder at relieving motion sickness. it's proven and guaranteed. The raw root is harsh but you can get it in gum-form and other forms too 2. Go to any shop that sells sailing-ship/ motorboat equipment and purchase a special anti-sea-sick wrist band, which basically has a protrusion that presses between two tendons on the underside of the wrist , right where the palm begins/ends. (this can also be done manually, one hand to the other but not both at the same time). works wonders give it a shot you'l see it works. glad to help

Try changing the refresh rate on your monitor (the number with Hz by it :P)...you will have to play around with it, but I hear that helps.

yeah, playing any half-life/source game with a low refresh rate on a CRT is asking to get sick.

I too suffer for motion sickness when playing Half life 2 (and all games using this engine).
After about 30mins to hour I have to stop as I get dizzy with a head ache.
It lasts for about 30mins after playing too

I play many other games with no ill effect, it must be something that is specific to the engine, I guess?

I'd be interested in finding out why this happens though.

1) go outside

2) look into the distance for a while

3) drink some water

4) get a TFT monitor with a decent refresh rate

The problem is that your eyes are detecting motion and your inner ear is not which causes a conflict. That is usually caused by focusing to much on the center of a FPS that has walls on both sides of you. Other FPSs allow you to focus on the entire screen which gives your eyes perspective on your environment. I have found that Halflife 1 and 2 were the absolute worse because of the claustrophobic environments and there is also something about which wall textures really grab your peripheral vision. Having a sinus condition or a cold will also make it worse because it affects your inner ear even more. There are FPSs that I have played through many times without a single issue.

For Halflife 1 I got rid of the aiming reticle so that I wasn't staring at the center. Halflife 2 I took Dramamine and eventually just stopped playing it because even getting rid of the reticle didn't help against those stark gray brick walls for some reason, and I hate having to take a pill to play a game.

I know you may really want to play the game, but if it makes you that sick and not much is helping... just stop playing it.

I got it from Portal (a LOT) and sometimes in Half Life 2. Lasted for about an hour afterwards too. But I endured and beat both games.

Portal and Ep 2 had an engine update that adds the possibility to change the FOV, which nearly erased the problem for me, because Portal was still kinda boring with all that green and white/gray and I'm not a HL fan.

OK, with an old round CRT, maybe.

Know that a Trinitron (ie Sony flatscreen CRT) is still far superior to any modern LCD (though, they are slowly catching up).

Would be nice if some ppl would do a bit of research before they post random incorrect information.

LCDs can cause motion sickness as well.
