Game looks really great too...lots of new updates including updated textures, new and updated animations, and updated interfaces. Game will be released next week in the US on the 16th.

For those who have already played the beta, I am sure you guys are already excited, but if you haven't heard about this game yet do yourself a favor and go to:

http://www.taleworlds.com/mb_download.html

Download the .960 beta client so you can get a feel for this truly unique and refreshing pc game. This is the kind of game that really shows what is different about PC gaming and why it's a lot of people's favorite system.

Ya I have owned it for like a year myself, though we both only bough the beta. They are a very small game company (originally it was just a guy and his wife) and they financed their game in a pretty unique manner.

It's a single player game...no online at all.

What is so great about the game is it's depiction of mounted medieval combat.

Check out this video for a taste of the combat:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/mountandblade/video/6193241/mount--blade-official-trailer-1?tag=videos;sd;1

It's also a very strategic game that allows you to command armies of soldiers and wage huge wars against rivals. It has some RPG elements like gaining levels, investing in skills, buying items, trading, and some other stuff.

Now mind you that video is from an old version, but you get the idea.

Also, the game already has a HUGE library of mods (everything from realism mods, to things like the 300 and LOTR), and that will only get bigger when the game is released. It has a HUGE following of dedicated fans and modders.

And what's not so great is everything else. The game is pretty skimpy outside of combat.

Well that's your opinion and you are entitled to it, however, I think it has a lot to offer outside of combat. What was the last version you played?

Anyways, it's an indie game created by a guy and his wife (mostly). Obviously this won't have the production values of something from larger studios. All this talk about hating EA and supporting "the little guy"...well here's your chance to actually support the people trying to do something different in the industry.

Like I said before, the team who developed this game is a guy and his wife (though now I believe they actually have a few more people working on it). They didn't have a publisher, and really didn't have the money to develop the game to it's completion. So they basically allowed people to play the beta for free, and if they liked the game, they could purchase the game ahead of time for a reduced price. This allowed them to continue developing the game as it has a very nice sized fan based of very dedicated fans.

I guess kids these days are just using betas as ways to play games for free or something?

Anyways, to answer your question people buy it because the beta/trial version while consisting of the full game, only allows you to progress to level 6 or something, though you can play as long as you want and it's the full game. Also, people just really enjoy the game and want to support the company. It's not a game that you just "finish" anyways, it has a lot of replayability.

there are two reviews already for the game :-

Pelit - 88% and Game Industry News - 4/5 , so it looks pretty good

The major points were deducted for graphics and sound

Ya...unfourtunetly they don't have the budget to make it look like Crysis, but in my opinion I think the graphics looks very good. I do understand the review docking points for those areas...after all the game is competing against the big boys so it should be reviewed as such. Still, very positive review overall.

Also, there is a mod in the works that actually improves the textures a great deal. Not only that, but it adds things like HDR and other effects.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but type out your words. Abbreviating words like you're texting an IM or your texting over the phone is really annoying. Personally, I feel that people that don't take the time to type their words all the way out are lazy and are somewhat lacking in intelligence....

There is a spell check option you can use to help check the spelling on words, if you're a poor speller. Also, proper punctuation is nice. One last thing, try not to start your sentences with a conjunction ("and" in this case).

I'm sorry about the rant, but things like this drive me crazy.

Now, as for why people pay for the game when they can play the Beta for free; that's because the Beta only allows you to reach a certain level (level 6 I believe). If you pay for the game you can play past level 6 and if you even really wanted to, you can use cheats. If you like third person games and swinging swords, shooting arrows and riding horses, then I strongly suggest you try to demo of this game. If you like the game enough, then you always have the option of purchasing it.

The "beta" and demo of Mount & Blade was limited. The beta was finished well over a year ago. The game engine and campaign have been in the tweaking stage now for over a year (since the close of the beta). The demo was free, but only allowed the player to reach level 6. If you wanted to go further than that, you had to buy the game. The money went to helping the company finish the devlopment and find a publisher for a full scale release. Most people have not heard of this game and if the price point is good, they will by and enjoy it. Maninly becuase the engine is fantastic. It was designed to be highly modable. In fact during the demo phase of the game there was no less then a hundred mods out for it.

I bought it last year because I wanted to see it make it to a full commercial release. I'm very pleased with the progress the game has made and cant wait to see whats going to happen in it's retail stage. I do believe that the devs said their next venture might be to play with this engine merge it with a new network engine they were toying with. I'm sure they can do it, but it would take them another couple of years (like egosoft and the long worked on X4) to get it out the door. Still would love to see a co-op campaign or MMO of M&B.

People who try and access betas just to "play the game" should be stabbed. By me. In the face. And by that I mean, people like the prepubescent a few posts up wondering why people buy games after playing the beta. The only reason beta's exist is so that developers can play test their games over a wide variety of machies, get outside opinions and help tweak all of the gameplay aspects so that is "complete" and ready for launch on time. You don't get to access beta because you are special and they want you to play their game for free. Sorry.

Actually...I kinda blame a lot of that on the recent actions of developers/publishers. Seems like "betas" are more and more being used as promotional tools then anything else.

Heck...Hellgate London you could BUY your way into the beta by pre-ordering the game lol...

Admittedly, I haven't tried the beta and my gaming queue is kind of high at the moment ;) so it's unlikely I'll get around to trying it in the extremely near future.

It sounds intriguing and might be something I'll really enjoy though. I've heard about this game (mostly good things) from other gamers for what seems like ages. Fantastic it gets a retail release!!!

Looks like a $39.99 MSRP via my googling.

I thought it was retailing at $30...but I admit I don't know for sure. I bought the game a long time ago for like $12 or something...

*edit*

Just checked, you can buy a licence/serial for $29.99 and download the full game when it's released (and also play the .960 version now unlocked), or wait until it's released and pay $39.99 at retail.

Alrighty, thanks man. Good to know for those looking to save a few bucks and get introduced to the game immediately. I'll likely look for the retail version.

Yeah, good stuff. Glad it's finally getting released. I'm still playing version .953 and i think that the game is excellent in its current state so anything that they add to the release version will be a plus. Hopefully they'll fix the sieges and the lords' sieging problems.

Not sure what you mean, but if you purchased the beta you get to download the full version (1.0) on release day without any further purchases.

But if you meant re-buy it just because you want to support them that's understandable. I hear the boxed version will have a nice detailed map and some other goodies like illustrated manual :)

This game's combat is seriously awesome, even on foot - I absolutely love the feel of it. And somewhat more importantly, this is an indie game in the truest sense of the word. I mean they've been working on it for years, mostly a husband/wife team doing it for the fun of it? They did some awesome things with it.. you should have seen how the engine looked back in .7xx beta haha.
