Mount and Blade is an Action-RPG that takes place in a fictional world of Calradia. You start off by creating a character and choose his starting class. You can fully customize his face and what type of character you want to be. You can be a medieval walking tank, an agile bowman, a tactile war leader, a horseman, a slave trader, a merchant, a cleric, or a combination of everything listed. The game is still in beta stages, but you can still do things like complete quests, level up, create an army, siege castles, start trade routes, fight in the arena, and rank up in the war. Still though, if that's not enough, there's a full-fledged Lord of the Rings mod which is extremely open-ended. Most of this game is based on infantry tactics and role playing. Combat is real-time, somewhat realistic, and NOT turnbased.

The game was originally developed by a husband and wife team, but they recently hired an additional member to speed up creation process. There's also dozens of total conversion mods that add so much more.

The graphics aren't amazing, but they're pretty damn good. If you have a good enough computer to max it with 4x AA, Bump Mapping, Pixel Shaders, and a Battle-Size of 1000 (with some mods like improved skyboxes), this games graphics can hold its own. Along with that, all battles take place in randomly generated terrain that conforms to the climate you start the battle in.

I've only played this for a few hours, but it's pretty amazing. It's a lot more fun than Oblivion in my opinion. It's crazy how bandits can knock you out and take you as a prisoner. Fun stuff. Has anyone else played it? Anyone think it's worth the money?

For anyone who hasn't played it, check it out at http://www.taleworlds.com/, there's a free trial.

I've owned it for the past year and a half, and yes, it is an amazing game.

Funny thing is, it's had many of the gameplay mechanics that developers (who are taking out fancy new games right now) say are "genre evolving" or "mind blowing" features for a long, long time.

I love the archery in that game, it's fun to sit on your horse a ways back shooting your bow, while your guys run ahead to melee the enemy.

I agree completely. That's not the only funny thing. It's also funny how it's developed by only 2 people full-time yet it beats out several game released today. It's not very funny though that absolutely no one knows about it. Maybe I should convert this into a M&B Intro thread.

I played it awhile back and I loved running over the enemy on my horse then swiping at them with my sword. Great horse combat.

What boggles my mind is how they hell can the review a game that is unfinished, and give it a score. Shouldn't it be a preview?

EDIT: Not only that, but that dates back to one of its first releases!

As an newbie to that game all i get are first impressions based on what is said. It was released in 2005. The official website screenshots look like a 2005 or worse product. No majorinos apart from PCG have reviewed it. So getting me to play it would be a hard task.

As a fan perhaps you should inform the production company that made the game to get it reviewed (as is) by gamespot or someone. Not many ppl are going to be interested otherwise.

I played the demo like 2 years ago and loved it. I decided to check it out last night to see if it got any better, but I couldn't even play the game :(

I was getting some "RGL Error" and CTD after the character creation. I checked out the boards and it seems to be a known problem with certain NVidia cards, and there is no solution.

I was considering buying the game, but I can't even play it...

Yah I love it as well. I bought it not too long ago actually. As soon as I hit lvl 6 I knew I had to buy it. It's been taking up a heckuva lot of my time lately. It's definetly worth it. Especially considering that your money actually goes directly to the people who developed it to support them and keep the project going.

The average gamespot user score is a 9.2 out of a lot of reviews. Also yes it is silly to review an unifinished game. Even now the beta is still like version .801 or something.

You Mount & Blade fans are like small children who have just been given a large oddly shaped easter egg, you love that its original has great variations on the Action RPG genre. In fact your so drawn in by the fancy-wrapping that when you finally sink your teeth into the chocolate and find, its hollow and unsubstantial on the inside you don't care , or worse you pretend it isn't.

Sure Mount and Blade has no rival for combat but thats it. Wheres the complex questing, the culture , the intrigue, there is some quality to mount & Blade but there far to much Action and far to little RPG. It isn't finished but there is only so much room for improvement in 0.8

Its a great game alright - i played it for a few weeks in and out and loved the combat aspect! Not to go into too much detail, but there's a certain satisfaction of firing an arrow, and seeing it land on an enemy, and stay there. Particularly with a head shot.

But there was something seriously hampering this game's full potential, and i think its this: the combat takes place in an arena, and not open country. What i mean here is that when combat is engaged, you are placed in an enclosed, boxed-in, squarepatch of grass and hills (that is fairly big, i admit) but it is an arena nonetheless. There is never a feeling of being part of a large open world (which oblivion does), and this really cramps any kind of atmosphere. If it were possible to change this aspect, which is to say to try (as near as possible) to combine the travelling map (which is very similar to the empire building aspect of Total War series, and is how your character moves around the world in Mount & Blade) and the combat element - it would be a massive improvement!

Aside from that its a great game that's made incredible by its low-budget background!

Well maybe if they had a development team working under them and a considerable amount of money then it could be possible. With three people working on this game (originally two) it goes beyond expectations. The game is still fine on it's own legs though. It's kind of like Sid Meir's Pirates! but on land, and with better battle sequences. It's more like that game then Oblivion or Midievil Total War.

Uhh....the game isn't finished. That'd be reviewing Quake Wars and saying "Woops, too many bugs, crappy game, don't buy it". It's an indie game.

Oh, and for you wanting more RPG elements, thats what mods are for. And I actually like its closed in space. I'd much prefer randomly generated environments as opposed to same-ol stuff. It's just a waste of time.
