mount&blade, an action-RPG made by a single man and his wife, prooves that you don't need an epic budget and an entire team of specialist programmers. All you need is an idea, determination, and a little skill. Not to say I have any, but I know potential when I see it, and this has the potential to be one of the greatest gaming experiences in years thanks to its surprisingly unique and addicting gameplay. Although the visuals are not state-of-the-art and do not require a graphics card that costs more than your actual stock computer, and it doesn't have mind-numbing sound effects that make it worth getting surround-sound, but if this game got a little support and recognition, i think it could be great, and hell, the graphics and audio can always get better as the budget grows.
For those of you who do not know ( maybe the majority of you, since I've only know about this game for a week, having read the forum topic: reasons why it's worth to be a PCgamer in 2007) this game is set in the medieval ages. Before you sigh, know that this game is completely unique in the fact that there is no fantasy. No more orcs or elves, not even healing potions. You level up your character, create a band of mercenaries, prisoners, and even farmers, and eventually turn it into an army that you have at your command in grande-scale battles all fought in real time. There is a massive emphasis on fighting from horseback, because as in real life, infantry equiped with a sword will get massacred against a knight on horseback. This game has a lot of strategy to it, but little to no micro-management, which may turn some people on or off, but at its heart, this is an action game with a historical twist that tries to be as realistic as it can be and succeeds most of the time.
You can try the free demo right here on gamespot, but it's seriously out of date and to put it plainly, the graphics were painful even for me, but it's come a long way and unfortunately none of the big gaming sites have been following it much, so if you wanna try it out, you can download it from here: http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,26287.0.html (it's the first post on the page) or http://mbwiki.info/index.php/Main_Page (it's in the latest news, you can't miss it)
You might like it or you might not, it's totally your call, but I'd just love to see this game take off and become a little more recognized in the gaming community, as it's already recieved almost completely positive reviews right here on this site.
