mount&blade, an action-RPG made by a single man and his wife, prooves that you don't need an epic budget and an entire team of specialist programmers. All you need is an idea, determination, and a little skill. Not to say I have any, but I know potential when I see it, and this has the potential to be one of the greatest gaming experiences in years thanks to its surprisingly unique and addicting gameplay. Although the visuals are not state-of-the-art and do not require a graphics card that costs more than your actual stock computer, and it doesn't have mind-numbing sound effects that make it worth getting surround-sound, but if this game got a little support and recognition, i think it could be great, and hell, the graphics and audio can always get better as the budget grows.

For those of you who do not know ( maybe the majority of you, since I've only know about this game for a week, having read the forum topic: reasons why it's worth to be a PCgamer in 2007) this game is set in the medieval ages. Before you sigh, know that this game is completely unique in the fact that there is no fantasy. No more orcs or elves, not even healing potions. You level up your character, create a band of mercenaries, prisoners, and even farmers, and eventually turn it into an army that you have at your command in grande-scale battles all fought in real time. There is a massive emphasis on fighting from horseback, because as in real life, infantry equiped with a sword will get massacred against a knight on horseback. This game has a lot of strategy to it, but little to no micro-management, which may turn some people on or off, but at its heart, this is an action game with a historical twist that tries to be as realistic as it can be and succeeds most of the time.

You can try the free demo right here on gamespot, but it's seriously out of date and to put it plainly, the graphics were painful even for me, but it's come a long way and unfortunately none of the big gaming sites have been following it much, so if you wanna try it out, you can download it from here: http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,26287.0.html (it's the first post on the page) or http://mbwiki.info/index.php/Main_Page (it's in the latest news, you can't miss it)

You might like it or you might not, it's totally your call, but I'd just love to see this game take off and become a little more recognized in the gaming community, as it's already recieved almost completely positive reviews right here on this site.

I agree completely. I made a thread similar to this one complete with screenshots. I have to add that the lastest update bumps it up to a must-play. The ragdoll, skyboxes, randomly generated terrain, everything is just perfect. I applaud the developers.

Yeah M&B is great, bought it in 05 when it was about $11. Got the new version(.890) the other day, it's nice, but since the previous update was last year in December I expected more, though maybe massive pirating of it hindered their progress some.

Also it's not a 2 person team(the first versions were) , they have about 6-7 people iirc.(check the credits)

Hate to say it but it's not compatible with the latest version of Mount and Blade and will be ported soon. This mod is extremely good though so it's worth waiting for. You pick your faction, race (including orcs), and class. You start off before the war so you go out and earn money, level up, and gain reputation. Using that reputation you can hire hero beasts, captains, access special armories, ect. You can also defeat factions and actually win the war. All cities found in LOTR have been recreated and you can access monuments and meet heroes like Sauron. You can even fight the Nazgul.

Actually, i thought they were pretty average as well, in fact, it seems to be the main complaint for this game. I'm not sure which version you downloaded, but the first time I tried it, it was from gamespot (which hasn't really updated since the first demo was put out lol). It was at version 0.751, it's now at 0.890 and the graphics are still outdated, but there was a world of improvement to the quality of the textures and lighting effects. It's no Oblivion, but it does ensure that almost any computer these days can run it perfectly.

I've also purchased this game, and I'd say it was well worth the money. Certainly not the best ever rpg, but it held my attention a lot longer then Oblivion did!

Hey, does anyone have any idea when the Mount&Blade retail version will be out? And does anyone know if it will be sold at big name stores like FutureShop and the like?
