These days it's less important since mice no longer have a ball which can collect dust or lose traction on different surfaces (or too much friction). The main thing is that the surface you use is fairly level and regular.
A clean desk surface will usually be good enough.
It depends on your desk. Mine offers poor tracking with a lot of skipping and it's high friction. Also if you want a soft surface to rest your hand on you obviously need a pad. Another important thing is replacement mouse feet, always keep a spare set to replace them when the teflon wears off.markop2003How does one just 'get' a spare set?
microsoft gaming mice include spare sets.... anywho, even a cheap mouse pad would do the trick. i sell them for $5au for a basic one (only costs me $2.5au so i bought one!). there are kickass razer gaming mouse pads that have specific textures to aid certain types of games, ie smooth and fast, or ones that are styled to shape ur speed and accuracy (plus they are HUGE!)

Everglide, Qpad, Steelseries and Corepad all make them for a veriety of mice.

Awesome, thanks.
Couldn't see what Everglide's shop has, it's under maintenance, but Corepad wants €8.00 freaking Euros for the mouse feet that I want. Such a ripoff!
I wonder if I could get Razer to send me some for cheaper or for free. *EDIT* Apparently they have them, expensive though. I'll have to check Amazon.
