Ive been having problem with games not running as well as they should and recently i checked my bus interface and its only running at 1x. Now I don't know heaps about the bios or anything so could someone give me a simple-ish guide to how to get it back to 16x because i think its my problem.

You should be able to set the bus speed in the cmos settings. Just hit delete when your computer boots up and it should take you to the cmos menu. After that start looking around for PCI-E settings and try to find the one you're looking for and set it to the highest value your motherboard has. (8x or 16x)

hmm i cant seem to see any pci-e settings in the cmos, just stuff on overclocking, "advanced features", turning on and off peripherals and changing voltage. Also ive been having an odd problem where the cards fan kicks in 3 times when i power it up and no image shows and i have to hit the reset button for anything to happen.

What kind of performance problem are you talking? 1x pcie is only twice as fast as original PCI, if it was really running at 1x you'd be seeing horrible performance, mayne you are but you didn't really say that... If theres no settings in cmos, maybe check that chipset drivers are all installed, no ?/! in device manager. Also where you are seeing that its running at 1x?

Well game performance isn't absolutely terrible but its not up to snuff for a 4870, like fallout 3 cant run on high settings at my native res 1080p or even at much lower like 720p and from what ive read in benchamarks it should be able to run max at even a higher res. (1920x1200).

I checked the bus interface in techpower GPU-Z and in catalyst control center and both say PCI-E 2.0 x16 @ x1 2.0.

Well, Fallout 3 should be no problem for a 4870, I can run 16x10 with my CPU gimping my 4850 on high settings. Ultra High is playable but visually I don't notice much diff... I don't know why you'd be running in x1, is it a crossfire board? Maybe try the other slot... Also whats your CPU?
