As the other ones said, Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2142. The comunity is still huge (third most played online dps acording to xfire stats). But I must say that I like more the "Infantry Only" servers (in BF 2 the unbalances between infantry and vehicles are SO brutal, even if is realistic).
The other options would be Quake Wars and Crysis Wars. Quake Wars is 5 times more deep than BF2 -I love both- and the balance between clases and infantry/vehicles is superb, but the comunity is not really big. Crysis Wars will come again next May 05, in the "Crysis Maximum Edition". Right now the game has 13 official Instant Action/Team Instant Action maps (next one will be launched next week):

... and 10 in Power Struggle. But there's tons of custom mp maps in european servers -mainly from IA/TIA modes-.

It isn't that realistic. Infantry would destroy any vehicles in an urban environment. Properly equipped infantry could easily deal with helicopters (hell, small arms fire can bring down even the largest helicopters... according to one of my marine friends who mans the 50cal on a transport chopper). Speaking of the 50cal, Incendiary rounds would be devastating against armor. The least they could have done in BF2 was made stinger missiles halfway decent and placed more of them. Jets don't even have to drop flares to avoid stingers and then they can come around and shoot you before you can lock on again (because of that magic box that lets them know where every vehicle is).
I have hopes that BF:BC2 will have decent balance between vehicles and air. The fact that snipers have the ability to drop a missile on them and that spec ops can tag a vehicle so that the anti-tank guy can shoot around a building. I'm hoping they'll remove jets altogether. It's really cool to have them, but they're just too overpowered.
I'm agree with your text; in modern wars infantry equiped with Stingers have shown very effective vs chopters, as the Hind in Afghanistan, and of course large caliber machineguns (as the .50 cal). But sadly DICE didn't include Stingers in BF 2 arsenal, and the regular LAW speed is ultra low in the game (making it useless vs good pilots). What I was trying to say is light weapons (assault rifles, submachine guns, pistols...) are near to useless vs vehicles in BF 2 and it seems logic. What is not logic is the absence of true efficient weapons vs those vehicles. BF 2142 or QW are better in this sense because vehicles are more vulnerable to all forms of damage. On the other side, even in ureban warfare I doubt that infantry can compete vs main battle tanks as M1 or Leopard II (standar RPGs are almost useless vs these monsters).
