Hey guys,

I'm a student and will most probably have to move into shared accommodation, as it is much cheaper.

The problem I am anticipating is that it will definitely require me to share the same connection as the other housemates. I dread having to do this and am much more willing to share bathroom/kitchen than internet. I'm sure most of you guys understand that. This situation is really horrible for any online gamer.

So, is it possible to have a second broadband connection in the same house? If the house has WiFi DSL, would it be more feasible to run a 2nd phone line for a 2nd DSL connection of my own, or to try and get cable internet run to the house instead? I'd be willing to pay for an additional phoneline or whatever is necessary for me to have private internet access and not worry about someone else using my bandwidth.

Has anyone had experience with this kind of thing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

how much bandwidth does ur isp provide? My isp provides me with 300gb a month so its more than enough for everything me and 3 others in my house need to do. Unless you plan to do hardcore torrents i don't think getting a dedicated connection is needed.l

This statement has absolutely nothing to do with the OP's situation. If your ISP is Docsis based, preferably Docsis 3.0, you can easily have 2 separate Internet connections in the same home. You will have to pay double for Internet, but your roomates would get their own modem and you would get your own. If your ISP offers Docsis 3.0, you should be able to get sufficient bandwidth without having to get 2 Internet connections. My ISP offers a 50/5Mbps connection and a 30/5Mbps connection that are both reasonably priced. With no bandwidth caps. If you have to have a DSL connection, this most likely will take the phone company running a second phone line to the house/apartment from the pole outside. That will not be a cheap install. It really depends on how many twisted pairs the current line that runs from the pole is using. Regardless of what you do, make absolutely sure you speak with the ISP regarding bandwidth caps and fees. Last thing you want to do is pay for this extra fast Internet only to have the ISP apply a cap and charging you an arm and a leg extra to actually use your Internet.

Adding a second phoneline costs money, i called BT in the UK for a similar thing and they wanted £300 installation and to pay a second rental and not to mention that means you'd have to pay your ISP double. It can be done and has been done, it'll cost you though. One thing you could do however is use two different ISPs as the lines will be two seperate entities and have their own seperate router and modem.

Thanks for your responses freesafety13 and JohnF111

It seems Virgin Media has been trialing DOCSIS 3 connections at 1.5 Gbps in London (where I live), though it doesn't seem to be popular yet. This is encouraging, but I haven't actually moved in to anywhere yet, so I'm not sure which ISP or setup will be available at the place I eventually move to.

I'm not about to pay 300 GBP for an additional line in a house I won't be at for more than a year, so hopefully another solution will present itself. Would be good if the place had ready connections for both DSL and cable, but you never know.

I suppose my best option is to find a house, and then maybe call some ISP's to see what's available before I make the decision to move in. Either way, I'm not prepared to spend a year sharing some crappy 10mbps with 4 other people or whatever. I know that wouldn't work for torrents or gaming.

Hopefully everything works out alright!

Couldn't you just setup QoS on the router?
