iTunes works well, mainly because it doesn't constantly run a visualization. I used to have the same problem before I got my new PC.

I use a free program called foobar.

It doesn't have all the flashy things of other media players, so it works well when I use it while gaming.

I just use Windows Media Player. My keyboard has media controls so I don't have to minimize.

I've used Winamp for a decade and it's still the best program I've found.

Windows Media player. dbowman

Same. It works fine and only uses ~35MB of RAM (according to Windows Task Manager) when open, and about 10-15 MB when minimized to the toolbar.

I use Foobar also. It only uses up like 2MB of RAM so it's not gonna affect your performance.

ditto on foobar. it's also got better sound quality than WMP pretty easily, in my experience.
