I really dont like shooters, only a very few selected ones so I will recommend on RPG
Planetscape Torment
Baldurs Gate 1
Baldurs Gate 2
Those three alone have enough gameplay value to hold you up for a loooong time, they are also ultimate classics every RPG fan should play once, even thoug they are "old" they didnt age a bit
The Orange Box
STALKER
Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2142
Morrowind
Oblivion
I'd also recommend Crysis and Bioshock, but I honestly wouldn't spend more than $30-$40 for these two
RPGs
What a lot of people fail to mention when they suggest RPGs is that Fallout and Fallout 2 are sortof turn based.
I'd heard a lot of good things about them, but when I tried to play it was absolutely terrible.
Neverwinter Nights is a great RPG, but the only problem is it takes forever and there isn't much reward (low level cap, levelling takes ages...).
Robbie wins the thread.
The only game I would add to his list is Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast (StarWars FPS/TPS with great melee combat and force powers).

Who cares if they're turn based. In a way, KOTOR and the Neverwinter Nights are turn based also (you take turns, it's just masked to be real time).
Call of Duty 4
Team Fortress 2 (orange box)
Counter Strike Source
Diablo 2 (well action RPG, but still a great game)
And definitely The Witcher for RPG

Never said I liked KOTOR, lol. Turn based just isn't my thing, same with a lot of people, so I was just pointing that out to him as he obviously was unaware (thought fallout was a racing game).

It's silly to discount a game because it's turn based though.
