I'm about to play skyrim for the first time (I know, shocking).

Anyways, what are some must have mods for this game?

I'd say the top 10 here are a must (minus the hair and naked body ones). The other 90 are also all awesome, but since it's your first time try not to get too many, it might be a bit too much.

Here's a hefty list of mods for Skyrim. Many popular and must have mods are listed as well.

It's not really worth playing without Skyre and deadly dragons.

EDIT:

Also go through this:

If you want to be a stealthy archer, for example, I recommend getting some of the overhauls like ACE, ABT, Spinning Arrows, etc... They make archery much better... There are overhauls like that for every discipline, though I haven't used any... All of my like 8 playthroughs of Skyrim have been as a sneaky archer lol...

If you have the Steam Version, just use the workshop and search for the most popular mods.  It is a lot simpler to work with than some of the nexus mods.  The mods that I have enjoyed the most (aside from visual ones) are probably..

"spend dragon souls for perks" couple this with "more dragons" and "more dragon loot" You don't have to level up to gain perks this way.  Allows you to invest in more skill trees than you would be able to otherwise.

and

"left hand rings"  Why should you not be able to wear more than one ring?  Fixes that.

Anyway, there are thousands of mods.  You might just want to try one of the mod packs that are full of mods that are known to work together without conflicting.  I think this one is one of the best. You can look for other groups of mods by selecting the "collections" tab in the workshop homepage.

You will need the latest version of SKSE for some of the mods in the pack to work.  Latest here.

The mod collection I use is called "Skyrim Enhanced".  I think there are several that are called this, so look for one that has around 70 mods within.  That is a good one to start with, and you can choose which ones to install or leave out.

Yup. I reccommend going to GEMS for skyrim mods. It's a shortlist of the the good mods. As for my Favourite/must haves: SkyRe, Frostfall, ASIS, Apocalypse Spells, Forgotten Magic, Immersive Armours, Immersive Weapons, Immersive NPCs, Sound propagation overhaul and Falskaar. I've recently started Falskaar, it's really solid so far. The quality is better than most of the vanilla questlines in the game. If you're looking for an ENB, I highly reccommend Somber ENB as a baseline to work on, it uses the latest ENB features. Then tweak to your liking (I changed the nights and sunglare/godrays to be more subtle)

Play other games until Enderal: The Shards of Order comes out.

Seriously, Nehrim was the only reason to ever install Oblivion.

I've not played this game yet but I would recommend not using mods the first time you play it. Enjoy the first impressions as the developers wanted and, if you're not convinced, then use mods like if there wasn't tomorrow. Ea, that's what I did with "Oblivion".

I wouldn't know, I played it once for 15 minutes and then uninstalled it. It's a really shit game with lazy animations.

If you don't know and can't help, why post? Of course, because you're a pathetic troll. TC SkyUI is essential

For me the only mandatory mods is the revisited menu system, I don't remember the name but it's quite popular. I played during my first 200 hourts of skyrimg without that hud and I regret, things could have been so much easier. Also, I have a mod to make unread books glow, this way you know which ones you have and which ones you don't. Helps if you like collecting as many as you can.
