how much would a good base unit for newish games eg. COD4 cost? or if it's broken how much would a good upgrade cost.

A new computer will run you about as much as you want to spend, and it will be able to play CoD4, so lets say $1000.

If it is broken, the upgrade cost will depend on what is broke.
