Overheating is normally a failed fan but if its brand new the heatsink might not have been attached properly.

Overheating is normally a failed fan but if its brand new the heatsink might not have been attached properly.

dbaron26
do you have any link that show how to attach the heatsink properly?

You say you got it dispatched from the USA which implies to me you don't live in the US, if this is the case the power supply will be set to US power settings which differs from say UK power supplies so you might need to replace the power supply.

nope the problem has to do with the heatsink cause when he presses the heatsink in place the temps go down drastically :). The power supply is a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 850 and it works in the UK. Most power supplies are manufacturered to work worldwide these days :)

Are you referring to Intel's "push pin" heatsinks? If that's the case, here's a guide explaining the proper way to install it. Note that as the heatsink has already made contact with the IHS, you may have to re-apply some thermal paste to get nominal temperatures.

On a side note, I find it rather odd that the heatsink came loose when shipped. That normally doesn't happen (unless the MFG didn't check the temperatures before shipping it), and I'm concerned that one of the pins may have snapped off the heatsink's base :?

No the V8 cooler does not have a pushpin installation.

Off topic but when you plug a 110volt powersupply into a 220 outlet you get a smoke and light show not overheating. Doing the reverse causes the powersupply to brownout and not turn on. Shouldnt do any damage after short exposure but is still very bad for it.

Many modern power supplies have Active PFC (which I assume the OP also has) and that completely gets rid of the switch issue.
