I might have the same problem, I have 60/40 vision I think. I read somewhere that carrots help maintain your eyesight.

I think 20/20 vision is max. Could be wrong.

Contacts is the only way, besides surgery and glasses. It's not that big a deal, nearly everyone will get them sooner or later. There's no exercises or foods that will improve your vision, carrots will only prevent you from getting some eye diseases or something, since you need the vitamins in them, but nothing will actually correct your eyes. Again, contacts aren't bad at all, just go to the eye doctor and you'll be glad you did.

Yep, you're wrong. Visual acuity (that there 20/20 or 60/40 rating) is based on how far away you are seeing things compared to what "normal" people are capable of seeing. 20/20 basically just means that you are seeing objects at 20 feet away what normal people see at 20 feet away. So, with 60/40, you are seeing stuff at 60 feet away what normal people are seeing at 40 feet away (meaning that you're eyes are actually better and not worse).....something tells me that you meant the numbers to be the other way around (and probably with some tweaked numbers...since I'm pretty sure that at least one of the numbers needs to be a 20).  Technically speaking, the best that the human eye is capable of seeing is rated at 20/10 (or thereabouts).

But back on task, if you don't want surgery or glasses or contact lenses, you're pretty much hosed. I'm not aware of any homeopathic remedies to near-sightedness, but even if there were, I'd be highly skeptical....plus, I like my glasses, they make me look cool. :P

I started to get bad vision in like 6th grade and around 8th grade I had 100/120 and by 12th grade (this year) I had 160/180 which is just genetics, my dad had the same problem, so yeah don't just blame the computer.

Gaming has been proved to sharpen eyesight. The entire theory of eyesight deterioration is changing. Doctors are realizing that exorcising your eyes, like any other muscle strengthens them, not wears them out. Corrective lenses also tend to weaken eyes, that is why you must continually get stronger prescriptions. I suggest you find a optometrist whom is younger and in touch with the newest theories.

Carrots are good for eyesight, more specifically nightvision but studies show that they do help general eyesight as well.  Any orange vegetable or fruit has this effect, including sweet potatoes, carrots, oranges, etc.

Also, to lessen the damage, you could purchase one of those screens that covers your monitors.  I dont know how they work, but I think its like a giant sunglass almost and it stops a lot of harmful light from bombarding your eyes.  You could also wear untinted, polarized sunglasses while you play games.

Probably not, and I had the same thing a few years ago. I wear glasses when night driving, and when its absolutely necessary. I was told by my doctor that being on the computer for extensive periods will not exactly mess up your vision. In fact, like a person said in a post above, it will quicken your eye reflexes and help your eyesight by a small margin.

Problably not, and I dont think playing less will work either.  Ive been playing games since I was a little kid, and for the past few years I play about 14-22 hours a week, and my eyesight is great.

Like the poster a few posts back said, go get a second opinion from a possibly younger or better informed doctor.

Eat carrots though, they are good for you!

From a son of a mother who is an actual eye doctor, my father as ignorant as he is, says that me playing games for too long was ruining my eye site. BS...I asked my mother and no..... Computers do not weaken your eye sight. Your eye sight is actualy based in hereditary. My mom told me that I got my dad's side of the familys traits and my eyes will get worse over time. I too had 20/20 vision when I was younger. Once I went through my teen years, it got worse and worse every year. But now I have such a very slight glasses for correctness, you would think my glasses are actualy strait glass with no corrected lences. So don't waist time over eyes, some people have 20/20, some people don;t. I.e Think about it, ever seen any old people who don't glasses????

60/40 is still good vision... 20/20 is the best you can get without surgery or anything.

your eyesight won't improve. most likely it will stay like that or go downhill unless you do surgery. i have a lcd 15' screen and i haven't had any problems with it. i have blurry vision when looking to something that is far away, but that is a genetic thing (my mom has the same, my dad has the inverse :S, my brother must use glasses always). i use glasses only when i need to. i don't eat too much carrots. i'm sure looking at your screen all day is not the problem. the problem is how CLOSE you are to the screen, unless you have one of these screen things to reduce radiation (can't remember its name) :)

cause i read somewhere that sitting infront of the comp alot causes things to be more blurry when they are far.

use search-engine and search for "yogic eyecare" , there are stuff out there that helps. you just have to try different things until you find something that works for you. I see most people here on this thread are negative... dont be :)
just try , do some research - something is bound to work for you, and if it doesn't, eventually you'll end up with glasses or lenses :P

I am in medical school and yes, we study opthalmology. Your eyes have literally changed shape, and this is what has caused your myopia (near-sightedness). Your vision will never naturally improve. Your only science/evidence-based options are to get surgery, where contacts, or where glasses. I assume you're young - if so, surgery is a bad choice as your eyes will continue to change until your mid 20's. Even with surgery, some people still need to wear corrective lenses. See an eye doctor or optometrist ASAP and get a prescription for contacts. Follow the care and sanitation rules given to you on your contact lens solution (and never buy the cheap stuff) and contacts will suit you well, though they do tend to dry out when you stare at a computer monitor. Eventually, you will also suffer from presbyopia, but this is age related so you have until your 50s or even later before it's too much of a problem. With age, everyone gets presbyopia. :-( Don't put off seeing an eye doctor!

well, i can see things pretty wel. But when i look about 70 ft ahead of myself, i cant see numbers on liike houses or for streets. If i were at a 4 lane intersection i could see across to what teh street is, but if i look out of my hosue to the other side of the street, i can barely read teh house number cause its kind of blury. Also, everyone in my family has great eyes.

Just so we understand each other, if your eyesight is worse than the average persons, you should get your eyes checked out. From personal experience I can tell you that when I first tried on glasses when I was 16, my vision improved a tremendous amount - and I didn't even think I needed glasses! It's impossible to perceive how poor your vision is because it fails slowly over time.

What you described tells me that you need to see an eye doctor. You will eventually start getting massive, frequent headaches as your eyes strain and fatigue trying to focus on distant objects. Do yourself a favor and see the eye doctor - you have nothing to lose. If he or she tells you to you need glasses or contacts, you can always decide not to get them (which would be a mistake). If your parents have vision insurance, have them make you an appointment right away.

Also, some eye/vision problems are genetic, and some are non-genetic. Even if your family members generally have great eye sight, you could still have genetic eye problems, but most likely your vision has worsened from all the time you've spent reading, playing games, and watching TVs.  Regardless of what is causing your vision to fail, get it checked.

It is so tempting to pull the old carrot/rabbit  joke out of the hat, but a little to obvious so I'm not gonna do that. When I started out with computers, monitors didn't reallt exist. Well, they did, but for sure you wouldn't wanted to buy them as they were way to expensive. So, back then we used a television. Just a normal tube, not a fancy modern plasma one. So imagine staring to that all day at minimum distance... yes I do have glasses. Does it have anything to do with looking at the tv for that long? I don't know really... My dad had very bad eyes and so did my sister - and they weren't sitting in front of a screen all day, so I always guessed it had to be something genetic.
