  • *NEW* 8800GT 512mb video car (when it comes out on Oct. 29th)

The total on newegg.com is $691.92 including shipping. With the added purchase of the new 8800GT 512mb when it comes out, it will make my total $945. I want this rig to last me at least 3 years and run Crysis with very high settings in XP at 1280x1024 to 1680x1050 res. I also want it to run upcoming games like GeOW(pc), UT3, COD4, Assasins Creed, Orange Box, and Far Cry 2 at very high settings in XP at 1280x1024 to 1680x1050 res.

What you guys think?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run Crysis on mostly high settings. Nice rig tho. Sorry to kinda go off topic here, but what would be better for my rig i will be building next month for crysis - A Q6600 (Quad Core Intel) or Higher End Core 2 Duo (Dual Core)? I will probably be getting at least 2 gb of ram and most likely an 8800gt. How much will the 8800gt's cost?

How much will the 8800gt's cost?Crysis_Pwns

Rumor has it, the 8800gt with 256mb of memory will be $200 and the 8800gt with 512mb of memory will be $250. The 512mb one is said tooutperformboth the 8800gts 320mb and 640mb video cards. Other rumorsclaim that the new 8800gtscoming out in November, is supposed to perform just as good as the 8800gtx atit's origninal price of 370-399 dollars.

Unlikely to happen, but GOD I hope that's true!

Dammit, ok what will I have to upgrade?

I already know the video card and probably the Ram if I upgrade to Vista which is another $112 added to my budget. :x

TCO= :cry:

*starts thinking to himself*

Why am I spending extra money for textures and possible multiplats just to miss out on Ninja Gaiden 2 and wait 2 years just to play halo 3.

Will it last 3 years? Depends on what your definition of "last" is. I have an Apple IIc from 1984 that still works. So technically it has "lasted" for 23 years! On the other hand if you expect to play games maxed there is no system you could possible build today that would still max games 3 years from now. If you are ok with playing games in medium settings 3 years from now then sure it will last 3 years.

I don't expect to max out games in 3 years with a purchase ofone of today's high end video cards. I might be a noob, but I ain't stupid. As long as the card can pump out at least medium settings for newer games after 2 years, then I'm good.

Yeah think back to October 2004, the top GPU would have been the 6800 Ultra and the top CPU would have been what, like a A32 3200+? There was no 64 bit, dual core, or PCI-E yet.

How would that setup play todays games? lol

I beg your pardon, according to Wiki the Athlon 64 came out in 2003. But I think they were only like server / FX models until late 2004/ early 2005. I do not remember any 64 bit CPUs being mainstream or for gaming in 2004, but I can't really remember.

PC gaming is getting out of hand these days. It's justcrazyhow often we need to upgrade our systems. For the amount you are paying for that video card, you canbuy a Xbox 360 or PS3. I originallyhope to get UT3 for the PC, but after playing the demo, which would only run on low settings, I gave up. I'm waiting for the console version instead, even if that's stilla few months away.

lol So the 8800GT is not even out yet, can you explain how you know it will cost more than a 360?

So the 6800 Ultra can still get medium in games like Bioshock, WiC, Hl2-EP2, and Crysis? And he is talking the 8800GT not the 8800GTX or 8800Ultra, so a more fare comparison would be to the 6800 GT or actually the 6800.

I dont think so....

well I didn't say every game now did I, it depends on how high the game is, eg a 6800 can run hl2ep2 on medium and it came out this year :P. maybe if he sacrifices AA, res, lighting particles etc he can do it, of course it will depend on the game.

TBH hardware has changed so much, i think a E6850 OCed with SLI 8800 ULTRA's could still max out games in 2 years time.

I know for a fact that a 7600GT can max out games and it is allmost 3 years old, a 7600GT can max bioshock, timeshift, MOH airborne, lost plantet as well.

2x 8800 GT will defantly last you 2 years, 2x 8800 ultras will last you approxmatly 3 years and then some before it startes shuttering when playing crysis 2 on max:P

im gonna follow this guys build aswell and just not have a video card for a few months until I have enough money as well 600 dollars is reasonable so is this a good build to follow or can someone make some recommendations to cheapen the price? Also I wont be getting the logitech crap/speakers.

You can not max Bioshock on a 7600GT in 1280x1024, maybe you can in 1024x768. And Bioshock is an amazingly well optimized game. You would struggle in medium in 1280x1024 on a 7600GT in WiC.

And did you know that the 7600GT went on sale in March 2006?? So the card has not even been around for 2 years!!

Here is the wikipedia page listing the dates for the 7 series cards - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_7_Series

Dude, I would just get vista. The performance hit isn't really as substantial as it's made out to be (usually 5-6fps) compared to the 60-120 fps you should be getting on most games on a high end card that is negligible. I would reccomend 3-4gb if you are going to use vista tho. My reason being that in a eyar or two, you will need vista. So, if you are going to buy an OS, why not just save yourself $120 down the road.

Regarding video cards, I would definitely wait for the rv670 (the new radeon card.) It should be about the same price as the 8800gt, and rumor has it that it is alot better than the 8800gt. (Time will tell on nov. 15th)

However, if you allready have xp, then nvm :)

Just wait to see what real world performance is on crysis. Dont go out and buy all this stuff just to find out it might not run it. Wait for benchmarks when the game actually comes out. Its to early to tell how its going to.

yea sorry I was thinking about the 7800GS wich is still a powerful card today

I dont believe that ATI will do to well with crysis I saw a video of the 2900XT playing crysis and it was jumping around at 22 to 8 FPS, I thought that was just poor, the card is ment to get faster since its using more of the RAM.
