so i'm planning on building a pc for the first time. i already have a list of all the parts i will order online through newegg.com

the basics are, core2duo @ 3.0ghz, 4 gig ram, geforce 9800 gtx+, 600watt psu, and a western digital 300 gig HD.

i am praying all the parts i order are compatible with each other, i checked the socket types etc, the fsb speed, for ram i checked for dd2 that the motherboard wanted along with the correct speed, thats about it there.

anyways, any tips? like, do you guys think its fairly balanced? or is there a severe bottleneck somewhere. its going to end up costing about $1k so i don't want to mess up.

You don't need a 600 psu with that setup

You can get a quad core machine for about $1000 now...

I would suggest looking at AMD's $100 quad cores...

Here is a build I just threw together using it.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=15237468

Tri-SLI capable, single +12v Rail PSU, GTS 250 which is a slightly better rebranded 9800GTX+, quad core, 4GB RAM, no OS, full tower case and lots of upgrade ability.

i chose the gtx+ because it was the most popular on newegg. there are so many different models of video cards it can get confusing knowing which one offers the most power for the price.

You can get a killer AMD based system for that price (with the new 5850 video card being released next week). What games are you gonna play with this by the way?

You know the HD 5850 is going to cost of $300 right?

Certainly do but he might be able to squeeze it in there if he goes for an AMD setup.

but if he can wait / strechout is budget / earn more money he can get HD5850 for 299$ which is like one of the best card for money value it like the 8800GT of ATI it will be there Triumph as it offer great power for low power consumation / idle / DX11 Feature / but if he can't then he may as well go for some 100-200$GPU

The onset of the ATI 5 series GPUs will almost certainly lower the prices of current-gen GPUs. I'd actually suggest waiting and see how the prices settle.
