Hello people. completely out of the blue, I just decided I wanted to build my own PC. I took a trip down to the local Techie shop and he made up a quote for me for a simple rig. I took it home to do a little research and have a think about it, and decided I wanted to make a few changes to his plans.

I have only ever bought ready made big box store computers before so I am a real novice on the internals of computers, but I figure that with the internet, the good geeks such as yourselves and my occassional firm grasp on common sense, I can give it a go! If it all turns to garbage, I can always just take the parts in to the pro's and have them put the jigsaw together for me.

I'm going to hook it up in my media room and play movies through it, connected to my home theatre, surf the net and play some PC exclusive games (very few).

My main concern is compatibility with the individual parts that I am going to buy 1 by 1. Not wanting to look like a dumbo in front of the tech guys, I thought I'd use the relative anonimity of the internet to ask my questions!

So, I want to list the parts I have been looking at on my local stores website, then if you helpful folks could point out any glaring ommissions or potential fubar situations, it'd be appreciated. So here goes...

Cooler Master Storm Scout Mid Tower

LG CH12LS28 Blue Ray Drive

Gigabyte GA-H77N-Wifi Motherboard

Intel i7 3770 Ivy Bridge Quad Core Processor

Seagate 2TB Barracuda Hard Drive

G.Skill Ripjaws X 8gb (either 2x4gb or 1x8gb)

Cooler Master GX-750W PSU

Windows 7

VIDEOS CARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have no idea!!! I really do not know jack diddly about these and cannot figure out how to compare different brands to each other. I want to be able to go to a game store and not have to worry too much about whether my PC will run the game. I do not want to run the most demanding games at the greatest detail, but I want to run games like Guild Wars and Blood Bowl quite well. I'm a big time console fan so I tend to buy most games for them.

Also, if I want to connect wirelessly to my home network, will I need to buy another part? Will it connect with the other parts?

OK, let me know, any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is welcome as I confess, my own knowledge is very limited.

if you want to play guildwars 2 well then the most you will need is a gtx 560 or hd 6870. a gtx 470 would also suffice but they consume more power and you would likely need to shop used for it.

furthermore downgrade the cpu to a core i5 3570k. the price difference is massive and preformance difference is infantessimel (ridiculously tiny). tbh you could have saved sweet piles of money on your system but if you have the cash to burn giver. cause yeah guildwars 2 is pretty damn easy to run and its the more demanding of the two games you listed that you intend to run.

the pc above.. that thing is designed for skyrim ENB modded 1200p with eyecandymods out the wazzoo.

my rig.. maxes guildwars 2 at about 55fps @ 900p and at about 60fps (average) @ 720p. it costs a fraction of that thing.. sh!t the cpu i own barely covers the boxes your parts come in XD

Cheers ionusX. I've changed to the i5 procesor. Saves me $200! Completely lost me on (what I assume was) graphics cards mumbo jumbo though.

make sure is the i5 3570k that allows overclocking ( since the price is almost identical with the one that does not allow overclocking ) Also change the motherboard to a Z77 chipset and not the H77 chipset you got since only Z77 allows overclocking ( again the price difference should be minimal ) As for video card what is your budget. Right in the $200-300 price range where most pc gamers usually buy Amd 7870,Amd 7850 and Nvidia Gtx 660 are all 3 excellent choices 7870 is the faster then about 5-10% lower performance is the gtx 660 and 7850 is another 10% lower performance compared to gtx 660. Of course the 7870 is the most expensive with gtx 660 about $20-30 cheaper and 7850 about $30-40 cheaper from gtx 660. All 3 cards will allow you to play most demanding games at 1080p and high detail Another suggestion if you want to save money is change the Ram and not get the Ripjaws. Sure are nice for those with money to spare but a normal 8gb kit for $50 will give you 95% of the performance of Ripjaws

For the RAM, G.Skill is a good brand and go with 2x4 GB so it can perform in dual channel mode.

For the video card I would get the Radeon 7870, it costs around $210-220. It's a fast card so your PC will be more future proof.

You might want to purchase a CPU heatsink such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus or Evo because the heatsink that's included with the i5-3570K is crap.

1) Get the i5 3570k instead of the i7.

2) Get 2x4GB of RAM.

3) No need for a 750W PSU. 550-600W is more than enough.

4) For your GPU get a GTX 560 or a Radeon 6870. If you can afford a little more, get a Radeon 7850.

Ok, started my long slow build by buying my case (on sale!) and had a talk to one of the guys at the store and after the great advice from you fine folks, and some input from him I am looking at this setup now...

Cooler Master Storm Enforcer Case (purchased, with extra 200mm fan thrown in free)

Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H

Intel i5 3570

G.Skill Ares 2x4GB DDR

Cooler Master V8 CPU Cooler

Corsair 650W HX-650

Intel 120GB SSD

Seagate 2TB Barracuda

Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit

LG Blu-Ray combo drive

Sapphire HD7850 GHZ Edition 2GB

Any glaring problems?

no problems . Just make sure is the 3570k and not the 3570 (one allows overclocking the other not and they are virtually the same price )
