Hello and thanks for looking. This will be my first PC desktop build. I'm doing this mostly for the quickest, most efficient Autodesk Maya workflow (3D app.). Here's a list with links of the parts I want and have done some research on:

CASE: Antec P182 ATX Mid Tower - $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129025&Tpk=antec%20p182

MOBO: MSI P45 Neo2-FR LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX - $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130184&Tpk=msi%20p45%20neo2

POWER: HIPER Type M HPU-4M880 880W Continuous @ 40°C ATX12V - $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817128010

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 - $550
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130

RAM: G.SKILL 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 - $500
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231183

VIDEO: EVGA 01G-P3-1284-AR GeForce GTX 280 SSC Edition 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported - $500
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130368&Tpk=evga%2001g-p3-1284-ar

HD: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s - $290
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136260&Tpk=western%20digital%20velociraptor%20300gb

CD/DVD: ASUS Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 14X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe - $35
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135156

MONITOR: Acer AL2216Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD - $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094&Tpk=AL2216Wbd

Standard mouse, keyboard, speakers

Aprox. Total: $2500 out of $3000 budget

Specific questions:
1 - Will everything fit on that case? I think so
2 - Considering the CPU, case, power supply and video card, do I need more fans?
3 - Are there any parts that aren't compatible with each other? As far as I can tell, everything should work (not a lot of PC hardware knowledge here, but I did a lot of research)
4 - I want Vista Ultimate 64-bit; which one from newegg.com should I get? Retail or OEM? What's the difference, and which one is the one that installs with a bunch of stuff that you don't really need?
5 - Am I missing anything? Do I need anything to use the internet? I have a router and DSL internet.
6 - Any good places that can put it all together nicely? I coudn't possibly even consider trying

Any advice, tips and comments are very welcome; I need as much help and advice as I can get. Thanks a ton for taking your time to help!

I wish i had that much money to spend on a computer. but since you are getting a intel motherboard chipset, you should get a 4870x2 instead of a GTX280. that card is more powerful than the TX 280 anyways

Dont bother with the oc edition of the 280, its over 50 bucks more and you can eaisly just clock a stock 280 to that if you wish.

The difference between the oem vista and retail is just that you get no support from microsoft and the motherboard its installed on is tied to the disk so you can only ever use it for that borad.

Are you planning on OCing? Looks great, i have no idea how much RAM is needed, 16GB seems a bit much, definitely ditch the PSU and look to Corsair/Seasonic/FSP/Enermax/Silverstone. Go with the OEM version, don't pay that much for the OS. All you need now is Firefox to use the internet :P

I'll switch to Corsair for the PSU. By the way, considering the CPU, video card and hard drive, arond how much power should I look into? 700-800 W?

For a P45 board, there really is no reason not to go with either an Asus board (P5Q, Maximus II), or if you are on a tighter budget a Biostar I45. Also 16GB of RAM is ridiculous overkill, the most I ever use is 4GB.

Edit: Compare prices between the PC Power & Cooling 750W Silencer and Corsair 750W TX, both will power the system wonderfully and quietly. Just try to pick up the cheapest one.

Quality 600W+ should be fine. I have no experience with workstations, but you might actually be better off with 8GB and a dual socket board for another quad core :o

Get a Gigabyte motherboard, asrock doesnt have good overclock options, asus has low quality (lately), and other companies cost alot more.

1-Yes

2.-Get at least two 120mm fans to put onto the side of your case. Also, MAKE SURE to get an aftermarket cooler for your processor, the ultra 120 is a spectacular cpu cooler.

3.- Everything is compatible, DO NOT buy 16gbs of ram, that is a complete waste. Only servers or extreme calculating machines use anything over 8gbs.

4.-Get the OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, its the same thing as the retail version. It comes with the Windows Vista install disk and a product key

5.-Make sure your router has an open ethernet port, test your internet no testmy.net to see if its performing with the right speed

6.-Look on yahoo.com's yellow pages section, search for computer stores in your area to get it all put together. Do not pay over $75 for the complete put together.

Ok, here are some important things, you may want to consider something other than the gtx 280, its overpriced at $500. You should get the Ati hd4870x2, it is faster, and it will give you the boost over the gtx 280

Consider spending some money on a gpu cooler, a cpu cooler, arctic cooling mx-2 thermal paste, some 120mm fans, maybe a different case, one from Lian-li (I recently watched some videos about it, they all say that Lian-li is a high quality manufacturer, and they say that their cases are cheaper than the competitions for their size)

Do not forget that the oem drives DO NOT come with the sata cable, however, the motherboard comes with a sata cable. Maybe you need another one

here are the things you might need

http://www.crazypc.com/products/ultra-120_extreme-50983.html

Change the power supply to this

It has a 20% until the 26th by the way

Thanks a lot for your help, everyone; really appreciate it!

Gamerkat, I've decided to get that videocard and power supply, and to buy more fans, AND to drop to 8gb ram :) Last question, which 4x2gb ram kit do you recommend? If I'm dropping to 8gb, I want the fastest ones :) Thanks again!

The P45 Gigabyte motherboards seems to have buggy bios and are not of better quality than Asus...

Ok, so then actually do not get the Gigabyte p45, its wierd that gigabyte screwed up, my p35 from them is flawless.

I recommend you get some 1066 ddr2 ram, gskill makes really good quality ram, but there are companies like ocz and corsair that make 1066. Good choice with 8gb, g.skill is flawless though, they make sure that their ram gets to you working.

Hi, me again with another 'last' question. Gamerkat, I like the video card you linked me to before, but apparently Maya has some glitches with ATI / AMD cards and prefers NVIDIA. I found this card, and it was very good reviews so far:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130366

This one only has 1GB of memory though, instead of 2. How bad is that, not exactly in terms of PC gaming but overall?

You make a good point. Well, here's the old mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130184&Tpk=msi%20p45%20neo2

And here's one I'm looking at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131297

$50 price difference, but I can't tell what the extra features are. I'm not really sure what I need on a mobo; I know I want it to support 16gb of DDR2 800 RAM.

Speaking of which, that new board I'm looking at has a memory standard of DDR2 1200; does that mean that DDR2 800 RAM won't work on it, or won't work as well, or does that make no difference?

Again, thanks to everyone who has been helping; I'm keeping notes on all this good info :)

Could use 1200 DDR2 RAM IMO, nothing can use 16GB of RAM now Vista only recognizes 3.25 total. Monitor isn't 1080P, recommend the Spectre 24" $300. Could use a Blu-Ray Burner. Internal HDD is small, recommend at least 500GB. 99% of apps can't use quad core, recommend dual core. Mobo might downscale SLI performance recommend one that won't auto-arrange anything. GPU is pricey, recommend 2 Zotac 8800GT OC in SLI, will play almost anything at full settings and is best performance/dollar value right now.
