Alright for whatever reason my card just stopped working after like 2 years. It happened after I put it in hibernation and when I went to go turn it on I wasn't getting any video. I thought it maybe the DVI cord or the monitor. but when i plugged in the VGA on the onboard and went to device manager and the card wasn't being recognized...but the fan is spinning (i had the case open)...:? So its broke right? I'm fine if it is as I've been looking for a reason to upgrade. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something that I could do first

Don't suppose you could stick it into another computer?

Try downloading the newest drivers for it and see if it comes up.

Correct me if I misread that, but you ARE getting video out of the VGA port right? Is it the right color depth and resolution? What - if anything - does device manager list for the video card?

Things to check -

1) If your PC has onboard graphics, be sure the BIOS is set to use PCIe video (your card) first

2) If the card needs external power, check that the plug isn't loose

3) Be sure the card itself is fully seated in the slot.

4) Try leaving the computer unplugged for about a minute then turn it back on.

Realistically, your first assumption - that the card is dead - is probably right. But any of the above might help unexpectedly (if you haven't already tried).

well I guess the card is dead :( cuz I already had the BIOS set to use PCIe first. left it off for a minute. and the card doesn't need any external power...oh well, time for a new one i guess

Toasted :| but hey, you have an excuse to upgrade. The jump from an 8600gt to, say, an HD 4850, GTS 250, HD 4870, or GTX 260... well it's pretty huge.
