About 45 minutes ago, I finally finished gutting and repacking my PC with new componants.

I put a new MB, memory, PSU and added a second video card. Here's what I'm working with now:

  • AMD 64 X2 5600+
  • ASUS M2N 570i motherboard
  • 4GB DDR2 800 memory (Yes, I do know that with my 32-bit XP I'm only getting use out of about 3.5GB and I'm ok with that)
  • 2x 8800GTS 640MB in SLI
  • 160GB HDD (kept my old HDD, will get a second bigger one eventually)
  • 750W Cooler Master PSU

I spent about 3 hours swapping things out and putting things in my PC, but it's finally done. With everything running at their stock settings, I pulled a 10893 3DMark06 score. That's almost 3000 points better then what my last PC could do.

So, I'm sitting pretty for a while to come before I'll even have to think about upgrading.

Oh, and for anyone that is uncertain about building a PC, it really isn't that hard. This is my first build and everything went smooth.

It's not just the video card that helps get good scores. You also have to take into count the MB, memory and processor. The better setup you have, the less likely your video card will be bottelnecked. In all honesty, if I was running and Intel quad or perhaps the AMD Phenom (is that how you spell it?) I'm guessing I'd be hitting 12-13000. I still feel my AMD 64 X2 5600+ (2.81MHz) would be more then enough for 1 8800GTS 640, but running SLI....? I feel I'm bottlenecking there a bit.

Eventually I'm going to be OC'ing the processor and video cards. I'll probably hit around 12000 or so when I'm done.

Either way, these scores don't make or break anyone, they're more kind of like guidelines. I'm content with my score and the ability to run games....I think I'll fire up Crysis and see what kind of settings I can crank out of this.

Yea I'm getting 11673 on Vista, and I've got a Q6600, 4gv of ram (not that it really matters).

So can't see how you're getting 11400 on 06?

I just got done OC'ing my computer a bit; took my 2.81GHz to 3.05 and I pushed the clocks on my video cards up 100MHz each.

After running 3DMark06 I scored 11682, which is about a 7.5% increase over my stock score. I have no need to run my computer OC'ed, so I put everything back to stock....but if or when I get a better cooling system setup in my PC, I don't see where I'd have any problems pushing up into the 12000s on 3DMark06. But I'm not in any hurry....
