I'm only 2 hours in (You'll know why later) and I got it 2 days ago. So far it's very fun, and I've gotten 2 pistols, some food and completed 5 tasks. Great game.

I messed up in some cases though:

1. Remember at the start, where the door is locked until you ask the guy and he tells you about Nimble? I took 8 minutes to figure out what to do.

2. I got a job to kill a rookie stalker, turns out I had already accomplished it. I was like "WTF how do I find this dude" and then I only figured it out when I returned to the guy who gave me the task and said "I came here for the job".

3. I kept walking into anomalies. Luckily I didn't touch what appeared to be an electric field in a tunnel.

My complaints:

1. I can't play for more than 1 hour at a time with this low-end PC, at that point it gets so laggy it becomes unplayable. I've only had a chance to play the game once per day since I got it, so that's why I'm only 2 hours in.

2. Weapons seem too innacurate - I missed shots at 20-30 meters while keeping my target in my sights. I understand that this is to stimulate the accuracy of most real pistols, but "most real pistols" still have about double that range.

The guns will get dead on accurate the farther you get into the game. If you already are liking it and have only played for about 2 hours, you are going to end up loving this game once you put more time into it.

I liked the game, and played for about 10hours but I found a few things annoying. I hated the map and found I constantly was lost and unsure of where to go and it always felt I had this huge walk ahead of me. Second, I found the graphics and atmosphere, while cool at first, dreary after a while and would have liked some change in scenary. Plus, the weapon accuracy wasn't so good. Overall though, it had some nice elements and was cool for a while.

It is a RPG/ FPS, it u play it like a standard FPS u are mistaken, The guns are inaccurate early as they have an ACCURACY rating. It is like an RPG in the way guns, armour get better as u progress. Believe me, the game gets amazing as u get further into it. it also happens to be more realistic then most shooters with realistic recoil, you have to shoot in quick bursts for accuracy. This is not a shooter, it is a RPG/FPS. Pople who complained about the game expected a standard FPS, it is not that at all. Great game, despite a few rough edges.

Glad to see your enjoying it.. this game has the most amazing atmosphere. The guns will get more accurate and you'll learn to start using your bolts to find a safe path through annomolies.

The tunnel you found.. yeah you might want to stay out of it as you found out. As you get used to the weapons and such the combat will become pretty easy.

Hmm I got a problem with a task. I've gotta "get the tail of the pseudodog" or something like that, but I can't find the bugger in my PDA (and no, I did not kill him already, the task's unchecked) and I therefore I decided to try and get it off a random mutant animal. So far, I have no idea how to scavenge it off Blind Dogs and Boars.

Call me an idiot, but how do I solve this thing?

You have to find a creature called a pseudodog. In beginner zones, if you aren't playing with a mod, you won't find any pseudodogs so you can't get a pseudodog tail.

Edit: Not exactly the best picture but this is a pseudodog:

The performance is atrocious. I got it a few days after it came out last spring when I had XP, and it ran "okay." I upgraded to vista a month or so later and it was unplayable - even though I can run everything from Hellgate to CoH to Warhammer on medium-high settings perfectly. A week ago someone told me about patches (duh me), but they did not improve performance whatsoever.

Were you using Full Dynamic Lighting? If so, did you use Float32?

I turned everything to low and used 800x600 - still unplayable. And drivers updated, vista tweaked, etc. But I have not tried this Float32 deal. Does it work?

My opinions:

Good game. It has good atmosphere and alot of games don't have that lately. Too bad the game crashes every time i press the Escape button so i can't save. too bad. I was getting low FPS on the lowest possible graphics settings until i downloaded the latest patch and some mod now i can run it Max with 1680x1050 resolution at a high frame rate.

Not meaning to sound like im bragging. But i am playing it on the highest detail possible with all settings maxed at 1440x900. Full Dynamic Lighting. No problems at all. The patch sorts out a few glitches....works great.

Eh I stopped playing it after you get to the part where your suppose to join one of the 2 warring factions. I liked it for a while but it was just too broken. Some of the missions were just stupid and boring and sometimes impossible to complete because of glitches and whatnot. Most of the time I spent playing it I was trying to figure out how the hell I was suppose to complete a mission. I did not like the RPG aspects of it at all, being hindered by weight was awful and being so limited as to what you can carry was annoying too and it really broke up the action and fun having to stop and do inventory management all the time. Also I felt it was too open-ended at times which made things confusing.

I recently reformatted my PC and lost my save game, I want to give this game another chance and complete it but I'm not sure if I want to play all that all over again. Maybe I'll install a mod or use cheats till I get back to where I was in the game.

Whats your specs? I have an 8800GT 2 gigs of ram and a AMD X2 4000 and it runs the game maxed out at an average of around 75-100fps.

I got to the Bar and stopped for some reason (probably the X18 Lab freaking me out) and plan on starting again and finishing this time. I loved the game. So incredibly atmospheric and unique. Without the "living world" it would have been a pretty bland shooter to say the least.

I suggest getting the latest patch (v1.0005) and downloading the Float32 mod to increase performance and fix many gameplay bugs and issues.

I absolutly love stalker, I beat it twice with no pathes or mods, just the 1.0.0 version, lol it crashed about a hundred times, but I still loved it, It's one of my top 5 games of all time actually. My dad just downloaded all the patches and good mods for it now all together and burned em for me, so now I'm gonna go back and play it again, I expect it to be completely different, I also want to beat it one last time just to refresh my memory of it so when I get clear sky, I'll be in the same feeling.

Playing the first 5 hours of STALKER was very confusing.. they just threw us at that cordon map and "do our thing" in the first place. But once you gird on this first 5 hours... you have a 3 mixture games to finish at. Ala GTA, Oblivion, Farcry.

I've got the patch 1.005 - I installed it before playing the game.

About Float32 - Do I need to start a new game to play with it? How good is the performance increase? Major, minor or massive?

3500+, 1GB, 7600GT. Why? I pay for my own college. :(

But I've had that same setup for a year and a half and the only game that's brought it to its knees is Stalker.

I agree with most of all people here that the game is awsome :P I really liked it until.... that lab x-18 mission.... I got to the lab entrance and went through the first door u open with the keys... And i ran around in the dark with only my flashligt to guide my way... And there it was.. The codelocked door. So i started to poke around for a passcode to the door.. and found it... So i headed back and hit the right buttons... 1 2 3 4.. enter... But then... Noting! Im stuck... Dunno if it is a bug or if i've done something wrong.. I just can't get through.... Maybe those patches u guys r talking about will fix it ? Anyone have any suggestions? I really need to complete that game.. or i dunno what i'll do :)

oh yeah. stalker is the surprise hit of 2007. it is truly amazing. and runs pretty good on any type gaming rig. i love how the game mixes shooter and rpg type gameplay. and the variety of weapons is pretty cool. and the feeling you get of being out there on your own in a strange place is really creepy. but makes the game more fun. i totally liked this game and plan to get clear sky as soon as it is released.

I recommend the oblivion lost mod, It adds most of the cut out monsters and vehicles, random blowouts and freeplay, more random A-life ai, not having to use a whole magazine to kill someone. Its alot better than vanilla stalker
