My screen flickers to the desktop and then back to my game very quickly. Why?

When I am playing PC games, every 5-10mins my screen will flicker to the desktop for a brief second, and then go back to my game. It doesn't make my games unplayable, but it is just very annoying. I have updated my video drivers, Java, DirectX, Windows, and I even updated my virus definitions and did a full scan on my computer. I also tried doing a disk cleanup and defragment, which also didn't work (I didn't really expect it to by I figured it was worth trying). I usually have my cooling pad on to cool my laptop, so I don't think its an overheating issue. Do you guys have any ideas as to why my screen keeps flickering to the desktop? Thanks!

It sounds like your video card drivers might be crashing. Try removing the old drivers and downloading new ones. Usually Windows will give a message if that happens, but you never can tell. Other things to check might be any programs that remap hotkeys, monitor your system, scan your folders, or anything that might be scheduled. Maybe you have a memory cleaner that's running every few minutes to free up ram or something like that.

I already removed the old ones and installed new ones last night, and the problem hasn't changed. I don't have any programs that remap hotkeys, and I've checked the scheduled scans and stuff that I could think of. I'm running out of ideas... Would you happen to know where the memory cleaner would be located if I had one?

You would probably know it if you did have one. Their names are usually obvious. Oh hey, one more thing that might be causing it, some newer laptops especially come with touchpad gestures. Where you might drag from the right side and it brings up a menu, or you drag a quick swipe down to minimize whatever you're running. I'm not sure if those gestures work at all with a real mouse, but maybe you might recognize something there. If you've checked almost all the software stuff, then you might want to start checking the hardware if possible. If you have a monitor somewhere, try hooking the laptop up to it and see if it still does it. If you don't have a monitor, see if having the laptop open at a different angle, like slightly less wide open, diminishes it. I really doubt either of these will work though, as it seems like a software problem. If nothing else, and it didn't use to do that, try running System Restore to get to a date before it started happening. ...Oh, one last thing. I used to have a laptop that had a hybrid video card with a weaker gpu for just doing simple things and a more heavy duty one for games. Well, the gaming GPU died by shorting out, so after that point I had to disable it in the BIOS and only use the weaker GPU for everything. I don't know if yours is like that, but maybe I put you on the right path, or at least eliminated a bunch of the wrong ones. Good night and good luck.

Yeah I don't think I have any memory cleaners then haha. I have a 1GB GeForce NVidia 550M graphics card and it does this with all my games, whether they are 2D or 3D. So I doubt it's due to the card being overpowered. I was playing Amnesia tonight and recorded when the screen would flicker, and I noticed that it was consistently flickering at 10 minute intervals. This makes me believe that there has to be some kind of program running in the background that is making me go to the desktop and back rapidly. I just have no idea what this program could be :(

One last suggestion then. Go to Power Options and set it to high performance. It could be trying to power something down every ten minutes and then starting it back up. If that doesn't get it, I'm stumped.

Nope I couldn't find anything that would power down or change every 10mins :( Could it possibly be my graphics card memory being dumped every 10mins?
