have you tried color and brightness settings on monitor and in windows? What's the type and model number of your monitor? Have you tried to attach the monitor to another system to see wether you have the same problem?

ok i adjusted the light on the monitor and it seems to be working (strangely though it often starts out looking fine for a couple hours, then it fades to white--does this mean i need a new monitor?)

what's weird is that while i was adjusting buttons on the monitor, i now have a large very clear square on the upper right of the screen--it can't get it back to match the rest of the screen. please help, i feel like such a jerk

The best possible way to know if you need a new monitor now that you have messed with the settings and it still happens is to use a different monitor to test it. If you don't have another monitor you should look on the back of a TV for a compatible plug and see if that works. You probably have a compatible plug if you have a newish TV.
