As much as you guys hate to hear it but Macbook or MacbookPro are the most popular and probably the best for documenting, working, browsing, and e-mail. no kidding.
My sister is in college too and its working great! plus it runs movies nicely, which is a good bonus!

Macs dont get viruses, Macs never crash, Macs dont get old. Its true
Im only going with windows these days because I like to game! I mean I might get my self a Mac Pro quad core and then install Vista on it!

For $600 you can't beat a Dell.

They have deals all the time on their Vostro line.

You could get a Vostro 1500 with 1.6-2.0 ghz C2D, 8400m GS, 1gb RAM, Vista basic for ~600 easily anytime they run a deal.

hey dude for some reason when you got a strong belief in something you are called a fanboy...Im sick and tired of that ok.
I just think that macbooks are the best notebooks out there until one comes out with a quadcore + an 8800GT which will probably be soon. Macbooks last ok and i know that through personal experience! I also have had other notebooks from Asus to Vaio... and i still think the macbook series kicks butt!

Macbooks are actually really good, can be costly, but they are much more stable and still fast and you can do just about everything windows can except game.

Quite true, however now they can do a bit more since Apple FINALLY decided to upgrade from Napa to Santa Rosa for MacBooks, with the X3100.

I have never understood why people need laptops for college. The two colleges that I have been to each had computer labs with easy to access USB ports on the computers. Sure a laptop would be nice, but if your college has a computer lab, do you really need a laptop?

Yes, I definitely do. I live an off-campus apartment while attending UCF. UCF is a huge university with very limited parking. It takes about 45 minutes to find a parking spot. I'm not spending 45 minutes of driving/gas to use a computer lab. Do you know how big of an inconvenience that would be? Then you add in the factor of the computer labs usually being full from 10am - 7pm... I'd then have to wait to use a computer.

Not to mention the convenience of doing your work at home. I think it's pretty stupid to assume a college student doesn't need a notebook. If anything, that's the biggest market for notebooks after businesses.
