Basically this is more of a rant than a question but i would like to have your feedback nonetheless.

Basically with the Intel Atom CPU around the corner i keep hearing hardware developers saying "this product uses less power so your laptop will have a longer battery life". Now am i stupid or something but i have always figure that the LCD screen will use LOADS more power than any single component in your laptop, so really all these little fixes will maybe only add a few extra minutes onto your laptops battery on a single charge.

So what iam thinking is that laptops are guaranteed the have **** battery times until we see MUCH lower power usage screens on the market....such as OLED screens maybe. Just wondering if you agree with this or am i missing some information here?

An OLED Monitor!

To be honest i think the future is less power consumption!

To be honest i think the future is less power consumption!

there has to be a balance...moderately low power comsumption combined with better batteries or another way of generating the power is the way to go.

also most mobile cpu's use under 70watts of power if case you were wondering

Well to be honest i havnt heard anything about developments in battery tech...if it doesent exist they cant really implement it!

Very interesting! Lets just hope it doesent cost loads to make them seeing as they didnt mention production costs.

its only natural for this to happen as battery life has greatly increased post P4 days, gradually other aspects of laptops will become more efficient in time but by sorting out the biggest power consumer, the cpu, its given hardware producers more flexibility (e.g. in HDD) in the amount of power their component uses.

But the point i was trying to make is that surely the CPU doesent use nearly as much power a a LCD monitor.

I think i may just shut my big mouth! This guy did a report on what uses the most power on laptops and look what he found!

well right now yh the CPU uses alot more, but with the Atom cpu's it should be much less. with the ultra low speeds intel claimed they should run between 0.65Watts and 2.75watts. from those graphs it seems the DVD should be the next priority however its unlikely for major producers to improves its efficiency to a degree that its actually worth it.

Well the DVD would only use constant power when watching DVD movies so i dont think they need improving much!

Well, from my experience I'd agree with the graph showing the CPU using more power. If you ever look at the specifications of processors and/or monitors, it shows the standard power comsumption. My 22" LCD monitor uses 45w to operate. My processor requires 125watts. It's not a laptop processor. However in the case of a laptop, the screen is smaller requiring less power, and usually use more power efficient processors (which still require more power than the screen).

I don't call 4 hours ****all, but yeah the monitor is the single biggest power drainer, use a extenal monitor and you get hours of gaming on a laptop

if that is true how does turn you monitor brightenss down just about double the battery life in some cases?
