The Command and Conquer games are pretty simple, and easy to get in to.
My friend, who had no previous RTS experience, got into Warcraft 3 and he thoroughly enjoys it.

I also recommend Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology.

If you want to jump straight into the deep end, check out Company of Heroes. ;)

definetly get world in conflict. try out the demo and you'll see how its a much more action oriented RTS. other games such as company of heroes get pretty hard after the first couple levels.

Yea, Warcraft 3 is easy to get into, and carries blizzards trademark 'massive payoff for little work' ethos that keeps you hooked and always makes you feel like you've acheived something :P Failing that there is always C&C.

Thats the problem I picked up CoH a while back but man "The deep end" is putting it mildly. I need to get my feet wet first.

I might have to check out Warcraft 3. What C&C game do you guys reccomend?

I second that. Command and conquer games are really easy to get into and they are good games. Red alert 3 also has an extensive tutorial that will help any novice player

hmm... World in conflict a noob friendly game? I have played RTS's most of my life and that one is one od those that I cant get into at all, though that might just be me, but I dont think its a game for someone whos not played that many RTS games. Company of heroes gets hard after a couple of levels is true.

The best one to start with is probably Warcraft, or something along the lines of Age of Empires, Age of mythology ect. ect. Empire Earth 2 is an easy game too.

Get Command and Conquer the First Decade, if you are not sure which C&C game to get.

Blizzard & Westwood RTSs are prime for that.

Try Starcraft. It may have a lot of strategy, but it's really easy to get into.

I think I started with Starcraft. Red Alert was fun, but Starcraft takes it for the simple yet deep and complex gameplay. Only after you play around with Starcraft and Warcraft, COH becomes so much more rewarding to play. Every game is a huge struggle :P You get a little careless, and you could lose half the map.

Are you that unfamiliar with RTS games artie? I'd absolutely consider myself a noob as well, I just don't play very many. At any rate, if that's the case, here's my suggestion:

Unless you've already started a game suggested by these fine folks and if you haven't already played it, begin with Plants vs. Zombies right now. It combines RTS, tower defense subgenre, and some collectible card elements, but most importantly it's incredibly fun to play! It will likely only wet your appetite for a strategy game with more depth.

If it's available to you, step up to something like Advance Wars Dual Strike (or Days of Ruin) DS -- turn-based but a good "step" IMO. If that's not an option or interest, skip that one and proceed to something like Red Alert 3, or World in Conflict. Eventually at some point, we'll be listening to you rave about how great something like Sins of a Solar Empire is!

Command and conquer games like everyone else said...BUT...rome total war, i recommended it to a few console friends of mine who have never touched an rts in their life and they said while it looked daunting at first it was very very easy to get into the groove with and understand fairly quickly.Plus it craps all over command and conquer..very cheap too,you can't really go wrong with the decision to buy it....

The battle for middle earth2 especially. Man I was amazed at how fun such a simple RTS could be. The campaigns are amazing (although they do **** on the lore sometimes). I would also reccomend Red Alert 3 because it has a really in depth tutorial and is pretty easy to get into once you know the basics.
